Ratliff says that when musical pieces do not sound "routine" and "repetitive", it is a refreshing sense of music. Many songs have the same repetitive beat, lyrics, and/or sound. Personally, I disagree with with Ratliff's opinion on linking and exclusivity. When I listen to music, I like it to be "catchy" and that usually means it has a repetitive sound to it. When songs have exclusivity, I usually tend to think that songs like that sound poorly written.
