The assessment for this standard will be an informal assessment in popcorn reading poetry. The teacher will select a new poem, "Spoiled Brat," by Shel Silverstein, for the students to read aloud in a popcorn reading style throughout the classroom. It is a longer style poem with 5 stanzas, and a rhyming scheme. As the students read and pass on passages to other students, the teacher is able to observe students proficiencies in oral rate, expression, and succession. Afterword, the teacher will ask students about the poem, its main point, and sequence of events, to gauge student understanding and reading comprehension. After assessment the teacher will be able to proceed accordingly.

Students will be placed in small groups to read the Shel Silverstein poem "Something's Missing." Students will take turns in the groups, going clockwise, to read two lines of the poem; the next student picking up where the previous student left off. This will allow the students to pick up on the rhyme sequencing if the poem, allowing them to get a feel for the elements of poetry while also getting a feel for rhythms in poetry reading. After completing the reading assignment, the student will fill out a worksheet about the rhyming and story elements of the poem. This poem in particular does not have a written ending, leaving it up to the reader to guess what is "missing." The worksheet will include an area for the student to decide what the poem is trying to conclude.

This lesson will be a challenge for ELL students because it requires reading aloud which may be difficult for some students and it requires identifying and understanding elements of poetry like rhyme, simile, and metaphor, etc. For these students, their grouping will be in with strategically created with students who will compliment their reading level. There will be a provided list of of rhyming words and pronunciations to help the students through the poems, and they will be given more time to complete the assignment.

Reteaching Activities

Should reteaching need to occur, the teacher will read aloud to the class, while the students circle up around her on the floor mat. As she reads the poem ("Spoiled Brat"), she will stop at a rhyming word, cover the word with her hand, and ask the student to use the prior rhyming and context clues to identify what each upcoming word could be. This activity involves a lot of participation and is a very interactive way to repeat a text, get students familiar with poetry reading fluency and elements, and get them to use reading comprehension skills to determine rhyme-- all the while also becoming familiar with rate and expression in reading.
