Butt the nature of this recovery differs from that of a typical hospital. For the most part of this novel, the hospital deals with mental illnesses or "shell-shock". The recovery process is therefore very ambiguous and the recovery methods "experimental" as Rivers mentioned. This disrupts the assumption that the patients are able to gradually recover in a pleasant surroundings of a normal hospital. We also realise that war Hospitals juxtapose the intensity of the front line with the image of peace in the war Hospitals.
