War Hospitals are also for a certain level of recovery. Butt the nature of this recovery differs from that of a typical hospital. For the most part of this novel, the hospital deals with mental illnesses or "shell-shock". The recovery process is therefore very ambiguous and the recovery methods "experimental" as Rivers mentioned. This disrupts the assumption that the patients are able to gradually recover in a pleasant surroundings of a normal hospital. We also realise that war Hospitals juxtapose the intensity of the front line with the image of peace in the war Hospitals. This can be seen in the first few sentences of the novel where Rivers observed a "peaceful" scene of tennis and patients relaxing but we later come to understand that there is a deeper layer of conflict and foreshadowing(?) in the sentence.

- Very unlike the conventional understanding what a hospital should be like, there is little presence of medical equipment, doctors in white coats etc. Given, this is because regeneration is set in an age where hospitals looked very different from how they are today, but there is not much of a 'clinical' feeling to the hospital in the novel.

- There are recreational facilities in the hospital: A swimming pool, a cinema. Is this really a hospital or a holiday home?
