Puritans are a group of religious protesters and originated from Europe. Puritans wanted to follow the ideology of John Calvin and believe they needed to purify the church of all the ungodly residue that lies in normal catholic churches.Puritans were probably best described as plain since the close they wore were very basic and bland, their writing style was plain, and lived in basic homes.Puritans sadly faced a lot of persecution and were forced towards Holand. they were also known as the pilgrims and in 1620 they left for the new world to establish a colony in Massachusetts.

The Puritans believed " In Adams fall we sinned all" apparently humankind has proven sinful through the fall of Adam and Eve and doomed for eternity. Puritans also thought that there was only an elect few aloud to continue to heaven after death. they believed that that even if you did every good dead you possibly could do and weren't chosen that you would still be damned and couldn't go to heaven. Puritans said that Christ only died for the elect so as a result not everyone was allowed to be saved. They took receiving grace very seriously, when puritans received grace they would feel intense emotion because it's stated that your reborn through this process.

Back then at that period they believed that Satan had a strong presence in their world or the "invisible world" such as disease, natural disasters, and bad fortune. they thought Satan was very active in their world and would routinely recruit new witches and wizards to wreak havoc and work for him. They believed they could tell if someone was involved in witchcraft by certain symptoms that came up. These puritans lived during a time of great trouble which caused them to have a strong belief in Satan. The congregational strife in salem village and frontier war with indians were huge factors of this.

The story goes that A girl named Betty Paris became strangely ill. She would dash around, dive under furniture, and complained of fever . however This could have been the cause of stress, child abuse, and boredom. This led to the heavy belief in witches being prevalent in their world. Many people were falsely convicted of being a witch by neighbors who were either looking for more property or liked them and believed that was the cause of witchcraft. By the end of 1692, over 200 people were jailed and standing accused of witchcraft. Nineteen men and woman were hanged, all having been convinced of witchcraft.

Tituba was accused by the girls of being a witch and teaching them witchcraft. When put on trial Tituba confessed to being a witch most likely because she was trying to save herself from certain harsh convictions if she would have continued to deny the judge. Anyone could be accused including upstanding members in society such as Martha Corey and Rebecca Nurse who were some of these least likely to be accused of witchcraft. This helped to spread hysteria in Salem since this meant anyone could be considered a witch.
