During school, some children may experience bullying or they could be the bully themselves. The bullied child will feel inadequate and like they don't matter. The way the bully treats them, is how they see themselves. On the other hand, the bully may be having troubles at home or other internal struggles. At this point he would be deflecting his own insecurities onto the victim.

Children model what they know. They are watching and listening to those around them, especially their parents. How their parents interact with them directly impacts how they are at school and in various social settings. If parents make their children feel loved, confident, and independent then that is how they will feel in the world. They will be confident in their choices and be more assertive and possibly a leader. On the flip side, if parents are strict and don't let their children make their own decision, they will either be withdrawn and isolated or they will be more "troublesome" and show rebellious behavior.

Friendships and bonds form during this stage. Children will socialize with others with their same interests. Many of these relationships develop into bonds that last throughout their school career and can even move into adulthood. These relationships can have positive or negative impacts on the child's behavior. Children are likely to follow the lead of their peers in order to feel like they belong.

Personality starts to shine through here. Personality can be persuaded by external factors such as parents and other social influences. If a child has a happy home environment with support and encouragement, they personality will most likely be more upbeat and personable. On the other side, if parents talk down to their children or make them feel like they can't do anything right, the child may feel defeated. They may not want to be outgoing or social for fear of doing something wrong.

Children experience stress like adults do. An example of stress a child may have would be school related. They are learning a lot of new things during middle childhood. They are having to take in a lot of information and remember it. The child may feel stress from having to learn vocabulary words, for example. They may become frustrated when given a word and they can't remember how to spell it or if they thought they spelled it correctly but later they learn that it was incorrect.
