The word ‘recesses’ is a plural noun meaning a clear, empty area created by carving more space out of space. Recesses of his armchair refers to the backmost area of the armchair where one may sit.

The word ‘insinuating’ is an adjective meaning unpleasant or manipulative. Insinuating manner refers to a disagreeable way of behaving.

His insinuating manner made everyone in the room uncomfortable.

The word ‘restive’ is an adjective meaning restless or unable to remain still. Became restive refers to someone who has become bored or dissatisfied and in becoming so, has become restless.

After an hour of waiting, the child became restive.

The word ‘connivance’ is a noun meaning the willingness to permit illegal activity. Connivance and assistance refers to the readiness to be complicit and to assist (presumably) with illegal activity.

2) Ludicrously beautiful - This phrase combines "ludicrously," which means absurdly, with "beautiful." It tells us that the beauty of something is so exaggerated that it seems absurd. It means an overwhelming sense of beauty that might be beyond what we would normally expect.

The end of the world was ludicrously beautiful in its own special way.

3) Wonderful sentiments - This phrase means feelings or expressions that are very positive. "Sentiments" refer to feelings or opinions. Together, they mean deep or eye-opening opinions.

The teacher was blown away by the wonderful sentiments made by his students.

4) Threadbare towel - A "threadbare towel" describes a towel that's worn out and frayed, with the fabric showing signs of use and age. "Threadbare" means that the fabric is so worn that the threads are showing through, meaning that it is old and in poor condition. The threadbare towel hung on my rack, the fabric still wet from the blood I'd spilt.

5) Non sequitur - This Latin phrase means that something is illogical. It is a statement or conclusion that doesn't logically follow from the argument before.

During the meeting, Daniel's comment about the weather was a non sequitur as it had absolutely nothing to do with discussing where to bury grandma

Description: "Throwing her shoulders back" is an expression that means to be brave. However, the phrase ends with "in an illusion of confidence" implying that she is actually not confident in herself.

Example: The suspect, who had threw his shoulders back in an illusion of confidence, did not manage to trick the detective.

3) The air felt heavy and oppressive

Description: Besides the air actually feeling heavy because of natural phenomenon, there is another meaning, that there is tension where the character is. It has the same meaning as "tension hung heavily in the air".

Example: The exam was about to start, and he felt that the air was heavy and oppressive.

4) Spices making her tongue tingle

Description: A description of how nice the spices taste makes readers' mouth water

Example: It was the best meal he had eaten in a while, with the spices making his tongue tingle.

Description: A message, or secret spreading quickly like a ripple

Example: His secret rippled through the crowd and before he knew it, the authorities had arrived.

Meaning: Everyone are humans and deserves to be treated like one regardless of race, religion or wealth

Sentence: What is the difference? We are both wearing a uniform even though you go to a public school and I go to a private school.

Meaning: Even if some people meant to be enemies because of their environment, they can be friends regardless of that.

Meaning:No matter what you wear, you will always be who you are and there is nothing you can do to change it expect to embrace yourself.

Sentence:No matter how many times you wear the right outfit and feel like the person you're pretending to be, it will never change the fact that you are you

4)“Sitting around miserable all day won't make you any happier.”

Meaning: Thinking about negative thoughts will not make your day any better

Sentence: Thinking about your test result will not make you any happier, start studying if you want to make a difference

5)“Don't make it worse by thinking it's more painful than it actually is.”

Meaning: Over exaggerating the pain that you will experience will only make you fear pain even more

Sentence: The dentist told me to not make it worse by thinking it is more painful than it actually is.

This means to feel extremely ashamed to the point of wanting to ‘die’ from it. If anyone found out that I took the money, I'd die of shame.

Leaf-speckled sunlight

A way to say that the sunlight is dappled when it is filtered through the leaves of trees.

 The leaf-speckled sunlight  fell across her face as she lay beneath the tree.

Dry-mouthed fear

 A way to say that a person’s mouth is dry from their fear. 

Before the presentation, I was struggling from severe dry-mouthed fear. 

Dusty moth-eaten clothes

A way to describe someone’s filthy clothes that have holes (moth-eaten) 

She felt bad for the orphan’s dusty, moth-eaten clothes.

All-seeing look

An all-seeing look is similar to a knowing look which means the person giving the look possibly saw something the person receiving the look did. 

• A lie can become the truth if it is being repeated over and over again. No human can accept a lie knowingly. But, if a lie is spread smartly, it is possible to convince people that the lie is true and transform it into the truth.

"Holding on to resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die."

• Resentment is a bitter feeling of injustice a feeling that you have been wronged. It can be a deeply painful experience. It can feel like a quiet rage smouldering slowly inside of you. Grudges do no good and they benefit no one, many grudges are simply misunderstandings that people didn't talk through.

"You find out who your real friends are when stuff like this happens."

• It means real friends are people who will be there for you despite your reputation or what others say. In this book, four people get framed for murder, because of this, they lose many friends. But the silver lining in this dark situation is that they find out who are their real friends.

The entire book is written in first person narrative style and divides its perspectives between each member of The Bayview Four.

• I like this writing technique as you can see each characters thoughts and justifications for their actions and their background. You can understand the characters' wrongdoings better and why others might judge them that way.

Foreshadowing

• One example of foreshadowing is the mention of Simon's gossip app, which he uses to reveal the secrets of his classmates. This early detail foreshadows the central role that secrets and revelations will play in the narrative.
