Initiatives have been established to increase the roles of women and minorities in STEM-related fields. STEM education breaks the traditional gender roles. In order to compete in a global economy, STEM education and careers must be a national priority. Each and every decision made uses an aspect of STEM to understand the implications.

People with STEM qualifications are very employable. Choosing science, technology, engineering and maths subjects opens up options later in life.
Il sistema educativo italiano non è stato in grado negli ultimi 20 anni di fornire le competenze STEM. Il numero di ricercatori in Italia è diminuito per mancanza di risorse
dall'articolo
" the evidence of persisting skills shortages in STEM fields in spite of high unemployment levels in many Member States "
" The share of STEM university graduates has increased in 15 Member States and at European level since the mid-2000s, whilst a decline in the share of STEM VET graduates is the predominant trend at the national level. "
"Concerns about the supply of STEM skills rely on two basic facts: the proportion of students going into STEM is not increasing at the European level and the underrepresentation of women persists. So far, these trends have been mitigated by the expansion of higher education, which has led to an increase in the absolute numbers of STEM university graduates in the European Union since the mid-2000s. The number of STEM VET graduates has nevertheless decreased. "

Employment in STEM is male-dominated. Women account for just 24 % of science and engineering professionals and 15 % of science and engineering associate professionals

Current demand of STEM skills concerns both upper-secondary and tertiary graduates and this trend is expected to persist. Currently 48 % of STEM-related occupations require medium level qualifications which are mostly acquired through initial upper-secondary level VET.

job shadowing is defined by the Manchester Metropolitan University, as:“(…) where an individual from one area of the organisation has the opportunity to work alongside and gain experience of the role of another individual, and gain an insight into that particular work area. It can also be used to provide a individual within a department the opportunity to work alongside more experienced colleagues so they can learn and develop within their current role”. This definition can also be applied to students “shadowing” in a company, and not just to individuals already in the workplace."
