Day 1

I learnt how Hongkongers take their religion very seriously.I went to the temple for the first time today. I have never been to a temple before and this was an eye opening experience for me. All of my knowledge about temples was always from text books and videos. When I visited the Man Mo temple I got to experience what it's like for people when the they visit the temple to pray. From burning incense to bowing their heads before the Gods, I get to see what it was like for people to go to the temple to pray. I also got to see the different instruments used for prayers. I also got to view the city from above. From there I could see how developed Hong Kong is as a city.I never had an opportunity to see a city at night from above before. I saw how beautiful the city was at night from Victoria Peak. It was truly incredible and breath taking for me as I never got see something like this in Singapore. This experience was truly unforgettable. The tram ride to Victoria Peak was also unforgettable. I got to ride up a mountain on a tram for the first time ever. The journey to the top allowed me to gradually get a glimpse of the city from above. I also got to see the lush greenery of the hill as I travelled up the hill.

Day 2

Today I got a chance to experience what life was like for a student in Hong Kong. During the classes, we got to do it with our buddies and see how much we differ in terms of what we are taught. I also got to learn more about the different uniforms, holidays and extra curricular activities (or clubs) which students have in Hong Kong. From this I could really see how the life of a student in Hong Kong is similar to that of a student in Singapore in terms of our life in school. I also got to learn more about the pop culture in Hong Kong. I could really see how pop culture in Hong Kong had really surpassed that of Singapore's. I learnt about the famous stars who started out and made Pop culture in Hong Kong popular worldwide. For example, I got to see how Bruce Lee has influenced modern day action films based on his fighting styles and how he made the action-film industry of Hong Kong popular. I also got to learn more about housing in Hong Kong. Although I never managed to get a closer look, I managed to get a glimpse of what the structures of public housing in Hong Kong was like. I also learnt a bit from the tour guide of how the housing system started due to a fire that occurred on Christmas day that caused many to become homeless. I learnt about how the public housing system is based on rent and how people have to earn less than or equal to 10000 HKD to live in a public housing apartment. This showed me that public housing in Hong Kong is only provided to those who are really in need.

Day 3

I managed to learn more about the English syllabus in Hong Kong. From the English lesson today, I learnt how the syllabus differed. What we learnt in Singapore in primary school is taught in forms 4 & 5 in Hong Kong. This is why our English is relatively better. I also learnt more about Chinese culture in the past. From some of the artefacts, I could see that the British had good relations with the ancient Chinese royal family. The British had gifted the ancient Chinese Emperors with artefacts like clocks and vases. I also learnt more about how ancient Chinese architecture is dying. In a video, I learnt about how the artist said that replicating his work was easy but finding someone to do it was difficult. From what I have seen, there is not much ancient Chinese architecture left, allowing me to infer that ancient Chinese art is truly fading away.

Day 4

The Hong Kong museum of art really showed me how art had developed over the years in Hong Kong. From simple paintings to eventually incorporating the western style of art, I could really see how art in Hong Kong had developed over the years. The avenue of stars also showed me how Hong Kong really recognises its celebrities. From hand print along the railing to statues I could really see how much Hong Kong recognises and appreciates their celebrities. This is something you can never see in Singapore. I could also see how Hong Kong had incorporated technology into their everyday lives. In my time in the school I could see how the teachers used an electronic whiteboard to teach the class. During ICT lessons, I could see how the teacher used a software to display what was on her screen on the screens of her students. Some of the artworks in the museum also involved scanning of QR codes to display certain images. These really showed me how developed Hong Kong was as a country in terms of technology.

Day 5

From the tour at Tai kwun I could really see what prison life was like for prisoners of Hong Kong in the past. From having to use two buckets(one for cleaning and one for waste) I could see how unsanitary the living conditions were for prisoners of the past. I could also see that the prisoners had a lot of spaces for interactions. The prison yard was rather large which could have provided many prisoners with chances to interact and forge bonds with each other. Lastly I could also see how developed the country was as a whole. From having the largest outdoor escalator in Asia to having a state of the art airport, I could really see how Hong Kong has developed as a country.
