The Baiji Dolphin is an exquisite animal that is different from other types of dolphins. The Baiji is also called "Goddess of the Yangtze." The body of the Baiji is like any other dolphin. The body of the dolphin is designed to guide the dolphin through the water with little to know energy. The only difference the Baiji has from other dolphins is that its eyes sit higher on its head and it has a long, upward facing snout. The design of the snout is to help the Baiji catch fish. Its snout helps it dive deep into the water with ease. The Baiji has poor eyesight and has to use echolocation to avoid hitting things. The Baiji's communicate by whistling or clicking. The Baiji is primarily a freshwater dolphin. Baiji's are found in the Yangtze River in China.

https://www.bioexpedition.com/baiji-dolphin/

                                               PROBLEM AT HOME

Planting and caring for flowers is something that many women and men take pride in, especially my mother. Along with many others, my mother spends many Saturdays watering and tending to her flower beds and her hanging pots. Every year the same problem arises. My mom will forget to water her hanging pots on an extremely hot day. After a few days without water her flowers begin to die and some are to the point of no return. So, the Baiji has inspired me for the Baiji System. I will use the Baiji's adaptations to create a system that will water the flowers without assistance. The Baiji can survive in freshwater, so why not create a system that uses only fresh water? Instead of complaining when it rains I want to embrace it. The Baiji System is a type of irrigation system that runs solely on rain water and requires no assistance from the gardener. Sounds amazing, right?

ADAPTATIONS TO HELP THE GARDENER

The Baiji dolphin adapts to its environment in several ways. The ways that it adapts has inspired me to create a completely hands free irrigation system that will water hanging pots. The Baiji dolphin camouflages itself into the water to hide from its predators. The Baiji system will be completely camouflaged into your porch and the water storage tank will be decorative. By being decorative it won't appear to be anything other than a decoration. So, the water storage tank will be camouflaged into the porch, the soffit, or the decorations that are on the porch. Another adaptation that the Baiji dolphin has is using clicking or whistling to communicate with one another. The Baiji system will utilize the adaptation of clicking by alerting the gardener that the watering is complete by clicking. The Baiji dolphin adapts by surviving in freshwater or salt water, but primarily in fresh water. The Baiji system will generate from the use of freshwater. Research shows that freshwater is better for flowers than water from the tap. The Baiji also adapts by utilizing the shape of its snout for guidance while swimming and for diving to catch fish. The Baiji system will use the shape of the snout as a dripping system to release water into the hanging pots.

                            IRRIGATION SYSTEM RESEARCH

Once I began researching about how to create a completely hands free system I realized that there are a ton of irrigation systems out there. The most common system that we would see at private homes or greenhouses would be drip systems or sprinkler systems. I took a little bit of both systems and created my own. The Baiji System is a system that can be mounted behind the soffit on your porch. Drip systems are usually mounted on the ceiling of the greenhouse and a sprinkler system is installed into the ground of your lawn. A greenhouse is not going for "pretty" when it comes to an irrigation system, but my mother can not stand for something to look junky or tacky. As a result the system will be hidden behind the soffit and the water storage container will be offered in multiple colors and designs to match your porch décor. So, what makes the Baiji System different from a drip system or a sprinkler system? The Baiji System runs entirely off rain water. Now, I understand that sometimes gardeners like to put Miracle Grow on their plants and this system will allow them to do so. This system has a timer that can be mounted on the porch post or in close proximity of the system.

https://www.gardeners.com/how-to/how-to-choose-a-watering-system/8747.html

There are two types of water storage containers. One will be squared and the other one is round. This allows for the gardener to choose which design goes best with his/her porch.

After some experimenting I decided that PVC pipe would probably be too bulky to store behind the soffit so, I adapted it by changing it to rubber tubing. The rubber tubing will be more flexible and will be least likely to leak once its installed.

The third and final prototype had the most changes. After reading about drip irrigation systems I decided to have only one dropper on each water storage system. With two droppers I was worried that the flower would get too much water and could die. I also added a timer. The timer will control when the dropper will release water into the flower pots. The gardener can set it to release water once or twice a day and can choose at what time it releases water.

The filter will filter the rain water to ensure that no leaves or any debris get into the Baiji system. The white represents the soffit on a porch and shows how the system will be behind the soffit. The blue box represents the water storage box. The water storage box will be designed as a decorative box. Then toward the side of the water storage box is the dropper that is shaped like the Baiji's snout.
