Elizabeth Ann Seton is a native-born American who grew up in the upper class of New York society. Her parents are Richard Bayley and Catherine Charlton. She was born on the 28th of August 1774 and died on January 4th, 1821 at the age of 46. Elizabeth’s mum died when she was 3 which was devastating for her and her family. Elizabeth is a patron saint of deaths of children, loss of parents, the opposition of church authorities, discrimination against piety, widows, and in-law problems.

Elizabeth loved to read, and she grew up simple, lonely, and quiet. As she loved to read, the bible was second nature to her. Then in 1794, Elizabeth married William Sutton, a young wealthy man. Not too long after they got married and they had 5 kids together, William became very sick and they had to move to Italy, in search of doctors. William died in Italy from tuberculosis. This caused Elizabeth to turn to Christianity. In March 1805 Elizabeth’s friends and family rejected her when she became a catholic.

The text is written by Luke (10; 25-37) and to teach followers of the catholic faith about what “Love your neighbour as yourself” really means. The parable guided Elizabeth Ann Seton on her path to Christianity and seek direction from the bible.

There is rest from our labours, peace from our enemies, freedom from our Sins. There we shall be always joyful—always beholding the presence of Him, who has purchased and prepared for us this unutterable glory. “Let not your hearts be troubled. Mrs Seton has finally found guidance and by preaching this prayer, this made her want to build Catholics schools for girls so that they can also find guidance from God and get an education.

The Rerum Novarum is an Encyclical letter written by Pope Leo XII on May the 15th 1891. The encyclical addresses the concern of the new Age of Industrialization, which is putting workers into crowded, unsafe factories where they worked long hours. These circumstances where putting innocent people in harm for money. In relation to Elizabeth Setons work, during the industrial revolution she created schools for children working long hires and introduced them to the church for guidance during these rough times. Even though Elizabeth wasn’t alive when the Rerum Novarum was written she still did Gods work and believed in the Christian Community.
