The use of rhetorical appeals in the Oral-B Pro-Health toothpaste commercial is strategic and can be effective, depending on the audience. Starting with ethos, the credibility of the brand is given by the claim that over a million Australians have switched to Oral-B. This creates a sense of trust and reliability. When people see that a large number of others are using the product, they may feel more inclined to try it themselves. However, the effectiveness can vary, some consumers might question the validity of the claim or want more information about why those people made the switch. Next is pathos, which goes into the audience's emotions and concerns about dental health. By addressing common issues like cavities and sensitivity, the ad connects with viewers on a personal level. This emotional appeal can be very powerful, as it resonates with people's fears about their health and well-being. If viewers feel that the product can greet their concerns, they're more likely to consider purchasing it. Finally, the logos appeal, which lists the benefits of the toothpaste, aims to provide logical reasons for consumers to choose Oral-B. However, the commercial also employs logical fallacies, such as appealing to popularity by suggesting that because many people use the product, it must be effective. While the benefits are presented, the lack of scientific backing in the commercial can weaken this appeal. Some consumers may want more detailed evidence or studies to support the claims made, which could detract from the overall effectiveness. In summary, the combination of these appeals can create a persuasive message, but their effectiveness depends on the audience's values. If viewers prioritize social proof and emotional reassurance, they may find the ad compelling. Those seeking evidence-based claims may remain unconvinced without additional information.
