In this novel it is initially presumed that the "greasers" are outsiders. They do not fit in with the ideals of what a "normal" young adult are within this time period. However, anybody could be an outsider. Since this novel is told from the point of view of Ponyboy, a greaser, it makes much more sense for the "Socs" to be outsiders, as they are different from the way Ponyboy was raised and what he is used to. In further thought, at the beginning of the novel, Ponyboy seems to analyze himself in comparison to his brothers, saying that he is the only one who enjoys movies and books.
