Black Maw: looks like a head with a mouth wide open. Represents hunger.

Sad Worm: a blue model that looks like a "worm drooping down out of a puddle. represents sadness because of the colour and pose.

Running Man: a blue "man" with 8s for legs and arms in an exaggerated position to show running. Represents hastiness and impatience. based on an existing fictional character - shape of legs and colour are clues to who.

Black Sprout: model resembles plant sprout. can represent growth but made with no specific intention. 2nd one made

He is a pioneer that helped make video art be recognised as art worldwide. he has used video to explore sense perception. He utilises light and sound for many of his artworks, like 'An Ocean Without a Shore'. 

Viola was born in 1951 and grew up in New York City. He did not grow up in a true 'artsy' home, but his mother did teach him how to draw early on. when it was time to leave school for Viola, he took his father's recommendation to go to University rather than an Art School, which Viola has said really helped him. "A lot of my friends were planning to go to art school and had I gone with them I would have been at least five years behind. The university had all the latest electronic equipment, as well as professors who were at the cutting edge of these new technologies..."
His first video work was called Tape I, made in 1972 while he was still a student at university. He explored the two dimensions of what you see and what you feel with his video experimentation. he graduated from University in 1972.
He said that conventional film-makers claimed that video would never last and that Viola and his colleagues were idiots for banking on it. Those people were obviously proven wrong when Viola got bigger and began receiving letters from different countries interested in what he and his equipment could do. He worked with people who later inspired his work, like Nam June Paik and Bruce Nauman.
1977 was the year his reputation was large enough to get an invitation to show his work in another country - Australia - and to art director Kira Perov. a few years later they were married with 2 children, and working closely with each other. 

Viola typically kept family and work matters separate until his mothers death in 1991, where after mourning for some time, took some home movies that he once separated from his work movies, and went on to create more videos that were more personal to him.

Viola is not interested in telling a narrative, which is why he didn't go down the path many others in his line of work did - work on feature films
