In 1931, the ADA began its “Seal of Acceptance” program, providing endorsement for dental products that meet the organization’s guidelines for safety and efficacy. According to the ADA, more than 200 over-the-counter products currently carry their Seal of Acceptance.

To qualify for the seal, a product must go through clinical and/or laboratory studies to confirm the product’s safety and effectiveness. Once earned, a seal is good for five years, provided that the composition of the product does not change in that period.
