My grandfather, great aunt, and great uncle grew up in Lower Paia, Maui in Hawaii. Today, Paia is known for its surfing reputation and good restaurants. However, during the late 1800’s Paia was known as a sugar town, where the largest sugar mill and plantation camps were created.

"The north shore town of Paia, Maui is now over 103 years old and boasts a history alive with diversity and accomplishment. The birth of the town can be traced back to the opening of the Paia Store in 1896. The real roots however, go further back to the creation of the plantation camps which housed workers of the Paia Sugar Mill which up until 2000 was Maui’s oldest operating plantation. The mill opened in 1880 and the store was eventually built to support the needs of the immigrant sugar workers."
https://www.paiamaui.com/history-of-paia.html

Years later, unfortunately Paia experienced several disasters:

In July 1930, they experienced a fire that destroyed the whole town causing 150 individuals to become homeless.

In April 1946, Paia experienced the largest tsunami in Hawaii's history, as a result of an earthquake originating in the Aleutian Islands.

The town was rebuilt and the plantation workers moved away to Maui's other towns, Kahului and Wailuku. This decreased Paia's population, however, in the 1960's and 70's hippies came to town and soon enough discovered the sport wind surfing through visiting one of Paia’s well known beaches, Ho’okipa Beach Park.

Although Paia is mistaken for a small town with nothing to do it is quite the opposite. Paia has plenty of attractions and restaurants for individuals to enjoy, many of which my grandpa, great aunt and uncle experienced throughout their lifetime.
For example, a few out of the many great restaurants in Paia include: Anthony’s Coffee Co. where giant pancakes are covered in coconut syrup, T. Komodo Bakery and Store where a delicious variety of donuts and pastries are sold, and Paia Fish Market Restaurant where the fish burgers and tacos are to die for.

Paia has many things to offer including: Surf & swimwear shops, coffee houses, art galleries, boutiques, a yoga studio, and more. However, Paia has become more of a tourist spot due to its location. Paia is one of the many towns individuals will pass on the Road to Hana. The Road to Hana is a twisting narrow road that involves beautiful sceneries and attractions to experience as you continue throughout the drive. For example, it involves a hike to the twin falls, waterfalls that are large enough to swim under and the Garden of Eden Arboretum, where a one hundred year old mango tree lives, among many others.
