Unhealthy Relationships

Rhiannon finds it easier to stay with Justin, despite him being abusive and emotionally detached and drained. She still manages to see that glimmer of hope and holds onto what could have been and the moments in which she sees the person that she first fell in love with. Trying to make it work with A is much harder since it is such uncharted territory and more difficult to sustain in the long term.

Appearance

Another big question that is raised is whether it is possible to truly love someone for what is on the inside rather than the outside. It is commonly emphasized that appearance and looks do not matter, but Rhiannon struggles to be able to still love A when changing bodies. This is especially hard since she does not feel the same amount of love towards A when in the body of a girl or someone she does not find is her "type". Rhiannon can not envision life with someone that does not look like A or what she believes is A. Once again, it comes to back to that constant, the consistency that is needed for a successful relationship, since A's personality is the only constant in this situation. Some can do it, but the majority of people can not live or love like that.

Sexuality

Gender Identity and sexuality are themes that are brought up in almost every sentence of the book. The issue starts with the character's name: A. The book never reveals the gender, whether it is a boy, girl, transgender, gay, straight, bisexual or any kind of label. In some respects, this shows just how the person or "spirit" inside of one may not even know themselves but society (Rhiannon in this case) tells them that they need to pick a gender, label or title in order to survive and be happy in life.

Especially in this book, perspective is key in whether the situation is propelled or halted. Rhiannon is more negative and uneasy about the whole idea of being in a relationship with A for the majority of the book. On the other hand, A is positive and constantly trying to reassure Rhiannon that it is possible and the relationship can work out.

Perfection

The idea of perfection is proved wrong in this book and is mainly seen through the actions of A who is greedy and wants Rhiannon all to him/herself all the time but fails to reciprocate this promise to Rhiannon in return. A often grows impatient of Rhiannon's inability to believe that A is telling the truth in the beginning of the book. In addition, A grew jealous of Justin who has Rhiannon all to himself and plenty of opportunities to spend time with her as well as treat her nicely. Another instance in which A was envious of another person was when A attended the funeral of a grandfather in which A wishes it was possible to make those meaningful relationships even if it ended in death, which was better than no one even realizing you ever existed once you are gone.

The lack of consistency in A's life makes it hard to create meaningful relationships with others (Chapter 31). A grows sympathetic of Rhiannon and wishes that he/she could be a constant in her life (Chapter 33). What makes it even worse is that constantly having to leave means that they can never live together, get married, have children or have a consistent life together (Chapter 39).
