I believe that it is important that teachers should constantly keep an open mind. Many of my great ideas come from students and coworkers. Last year, I had a big problem with keeping track of what I taught which made it difficult for students who were absent. This year I have a new coworker who introduced me to Google Classroom and explained that I could use this resource for students to find missing material. Now, I upload my notes and student work for each class every day.

Additionally, I found my students to be my biggest teachers. They allow me to find creative ways to teach new material according to their interest. A great example of this was when my students gave me another way to teach combining like terms. My student was curious why we cannot add 7x +2 to get 9x. Knowing that my students had an interest in money, I asked him “if I had 7 calculators and $2, do I now have $9 or 9 calculators?” He responded with, “yes, if you sell the calculators for $1 each.” This led to an excellent discussion about variables and why they cannot be added to constants.

Willing to LEARN

Most importantly, my educational philosophy places a big importance on constantly learning from others. Learning is a constant part of teaching. I am a teacher because I love to learn and I hope to instill that quality in my students. Taking a small amount of time away from teaching to bond with your students can make all of the difference in your classroom. You will have the ability to know your students needs and wants which will lead to more efficient learning.

I believe that teachers can do a lot in little time for all students to succeed. Last year, I taught 44 minute classes. Within the 44 minutes, I was able to have a quick conversation with my students, teach a lesson and have them complete hands on projects which gave my students the opportunity to practice material in a fun creative way. I allot a few days for game time. During game time, I will observe my students likes and dislikes and I will sit down with students to get the opportunity to bond. I have found that playing games after quizzes relieves stress and helps take the fear away from test day. More of my students want to come on those days and I notice that they practice more so that they can have time to play games on quiz day.
