The format of my performance was film, it affected some of my creative choices because acting for a camera is different then acting for a live audience, ie you don't get the atmosphere to help you with enhancing your performance. I have never performed for a camera before in a show reel format. I chose the songs to perform because I knew that I could get across the meaning of the lyrics by singing them to camera. I made sure I used plenty of facial expression whilst singing the lyrics as the camera would not catch any body movement. I used plenty of emotion in my voice to get across my feelings/the feelings of the song. I was more subtle with my performance as I would normally make my acting bigger so that it could be enjoyed even in the back row, when on stage.

My target audience was potential casting directors/future employers. I made sure I sang and performed using as many of my learnt vocal techniques and acting methods as I could to ensure that this short show reel displayed all of my talents.

I practiced the pieces using different styles to see which best suited me. This made me feel more comfortable and confident when performing to the camera. This is not something that I am used to doing, so I needed to make sure that I performed as I would do on stage.

An example of an idea that helped shape the project was when we analysed the lyrics of the songs. I would write a descriptive word per line to prompt me on how to deliver the lyrics i was singing. This also ensured that my delivery was consistent throughout the song. Without the prompts I could have delivered a song with a mix of different emotions.

This helped me project my belt when singing emotional parts of the song.

I watched various actors performing these songs to get inspiration of how to perform the songs and how I could perform them using my own ideas.

My course tutor gave me direction and assisted with staging and performing the songs. She directed me suggesting ideas of how to improve my performance. She would question my choices which made me try lots of different versions of the performance until I felt I have mastered how I wanted my song to be performed.

When we worked together as a group the choice that helped me tell the story or messages in each piece, was the use of body language. I would look at the floor during some points in the song Lifeboat to show emotional status. I would use facial expression to really get the varying emotions throughout the songs across. To make my intentions in the song clear to my audience, I over exaggerated emotions, for example during my performance of nobody's side I tried to put across how torn I was with the man I was singing about by making the chorus bigger and more exaggerated, then during the verse I would be more subtle.

On certain words or phrases I put maximum emphasis on important or emotive lyrics. I would make sure that my acting matched what I was trying to get across. There was a moment in Lifeboat where I pointed and swapped from singing to speaking to really get the emphasis of what I was saying across.

I would change the tone in my voice, the emotion behind my interpretation and whether to belt certain parts or not. I would listen to the feedback given to me by my group of how the different ways I sang worked or didn't. I would then pick out my favourite parts or the parts that my group felt worked the best in each version of the songs I sung.

During one to one conversations staging was discussed, where and how to stand for the camera.

My collaborative group was my course tutors, whose experience and opinions were valuable during this time. I didn't disagree with them about anything substantial, but I didn't always agree on their choice of how to perform my song, so I would adjust my performance until I was satisfied that I was getting the meaning of the song across. If asked if I was happy with one of the ways I performed a song, I understood that they had a suggestion of how to potentially give a better performance. I would always take their ideas, and try them. I sometimes agreed that their suggestions worked. If I didn't, then I would try another way to achieve the best version of my performance.
