Prokopis- Ideas for starting those conversations: Student Surveys, Assignment/Class Reflection Pieces, or perhaps discussion boards/student presentations about meaningful school activities they have experienced in the past (tie it into a lesson). We could also build connections in the classroom by asking students more questions related to their lives/sharing more about ourselves. P.S I want a commode now.... haha!

After voting, I'll ask the students why they voted for what they did. It gets a conversation started and helps me figure out prior knowledge :)

I like to give students an opportunity to tell me what they want to do in class. I have them dropbox photos that they use for daily drawing practice and I let them help me make choices about the mediums we study and the subject matter we work with. I also encourage students to take projects in a personal direction so that they are personally interested and more invested in their work.

The com mode idea was hysterical! I agree that students like to laugh and want their teacher to laugh with them. I think a class reflection would be a great way. We just ended the first nine weeks and I think I am going to have my students reflect on what they liked and didn't like about the first nine weeks in science. Even a wordle of their favorite things from class or words they would use to describe science this year.

Giving them some ownership in the classroom helps them feel respected and usually helps keep them motivated.

Students definitely want to laugh and have fun. They also like to get to know you as a person. It's one of the reasons I continue to teach middle school. The students are still innocent enough to be silly (and not care) while able to hold a complete conversation with you. The ability to go outside and/or have fun in class is what they craze the most.

I think it helps to have balance. Sometimes there is serious "review" work, down to the nitty-gritty that the students have to do in order to practice the skill. I try to balance that with more creative and engaging activities, either during the same block or across classes. I told the students about the article and the "commode reading." They thought it was pretty funny, but I think they are okay without having a commode in the classroom. Oh, and a bunch of them wanted to know what a commode was!
