I think this quote from Fr. Charles means that God became human to show us that we are capable of living lives of loving each other and living in a God-like way. God calls us to follow his ways through his teachings, and if we instill these teachings in our daily lives we will be able to live in eternal life with God. We are thus capable of being like God.

I think that throughout the film Tolkien hid many different Catholic themes and ideals to preach the ways of the Church and aspects of a Catholic life. As a Catholic I know there are many symbols that are all around me but sometimes I don't always see them. Overall there are many different things that we symbolize like wind, water, darkness, and light. All of these things are incorporated in film and are hidden symbols in faith.

To be deprived is to be lacking of a basic material and to be depraved is morally corrupt. It is said that "Catholics view the world as deprived but not depraved". I think this means that we believe when we sin we are lacking God's grace and a clear conscience but we are not evil. We do not believe that the world is depraved because we believe that we are born inherently good and we have God's forgiveness.

1. The Ring - This is one of the biggest symbols throughout the book. It symbolizes corruption of power and sin. The ring causes people to feel dominant and urges dangerous evils. This correlates to when we sin. Sometimes we get so caught up in sin we get overwhelmed and it becomes a habit.
2. Frodo - He represents us in our daily lives as Catholics. Just like Frodo, we sometimes struggle to destroy the temptation and sinful nature that comes our way. He nearly falls into the hands of evil but is saved by "the will of God".
3. The journey to Mount Doom- This was Frodo's journey to destroy sin and symbolizes Jesus' carrying the cross to save salvation. Frodo saved everyone from corruption of the ring just like Jesus did from sin when he died on the cross.

Question #1 - Consider what you’ve learned so far about sacraments and sacramentals. Summarize how/why Fr. Charles believes the “elvish artifacts” are good examples of how sacramentals function within Catholicism.

Sacraments and Sacramentals are signs of God's grace in our lives. Father Charles believes that these are praiseworthy examples, that ordinary is the means for the extraordinary. The "elvish artifacts" were composed of earthly/middle earth elements. He sees some of these as signs of God's presence represented by light without a visible source.

Question #3 - Think of the Lembas Bread which the elves give to Frodo and Sam. How is this different than how Catholics understand the Eucharist? And yet, why does Fr. Charlie state that it can still be considered to be sacramental?

The Lembas Bread is very different from the Catholic Eucharist. Catholics view the Eucharist as being literally transformed from actual bread. A priest consecrates it, and it is considered a very sacred gift we are able to receive. Father Charles considers the Lembas Bread because its an artifact of the elves that contains elements that exceed physical properties.
