What I have learned about using ICT and DT in Education

ICT and DT are the catalysts our recalcitrant education bureaucracies have required to energise the revolution from teacher-centred to learner-centred learning environments. This is integral to the nurture of intrinsic motivation - bolstering student's own inner resources and resilience — and the key to empowering and supporting students safety in online environments, because there is no way that access to the internet can be controlled. Students need be scaffolded with guidance and supervision until such time that they have reached an age and maturity level sufficient to protect their own well-being. Intrinsic motivation is key to enabling students to use these technologies creatively: when we are intrinsically motivated we are able to connect directly with our spirituality - our creative core. The process outlined in Papert's constructionism is not new but is an age old formula used in the creative arts for the development of 'artefacts' that serve to inspire our societies: stimulating more creative activity. Supporting this, our responsibility as teachers is to utilise hybrid pedagogies and design blended learning environments that are non-hierarchical, student-centred, focus on skill building, collaborative, aim to meet student's holistic needs, and are inclusive of diversity. To support this ideal, as a teacher I need to be prepared to continually up-skill as new and exciting technologies become available in order that I can fluidly adapt my technological and pedagogical content knowledge: applying the best fit of ICT and/or DT with the Australian Curriculum. I am aware that my students will be capable of teaching me as much about the new technologies as I am of teaching them.

How I will learn it

True to the principles of intrinsic motivation, I will continue to enjoy my (now) blended, life-long learning journey. I will ask my students to inform and teach me any new technology they enjoy. I have subscribed to multiple technology information feeds to keep me current, including teachertrainingvideos.com hosted by passionate teacher Russell Stannard to keep me posted and teach me of any new innovations in the digital platforms that can be used for education. I will utilise reflective practice within the classroom. I will employ intuition and discovery based learning in my exploration of: virtual worlds such as Second Life, online peer-reviewed resources such as https://hybridpedagogy.org/, alerts to relevant articles on https://www.researchgate.net/, and government education sites such as https://www.digitaltechnologieshub.edu.au/. I intend to create virtual yarning circles in Zoom with professional peers, and others from more diverse fields, to learn and share varied perspectives and wisdom, and engage in the collaborative development of digital artefacts such as ebooks. I will ask a friend to teach me Microsoft skills.
