The quote is rather dark and sinister. My initial reaction was more introspective, looking into how truthful the quote is. Because it could apply to everyone's lives, have multiple meanings and affects on people, as well as be a philosophical outlook on life, I chose this quote.

Macbeth did not have such a happy outlook on life. When you die, so does your legacy. Nothing matters because we end up in the same place.

Quote in real life: With friends.

My friend was telling a story about what her boyfriend had done this time, and that she was thinking of breaking up with him. In response, I used this quote. She didn't understand at first, and thought that I was saying that she was lying. I explained that the quote originally is talking about life, but that I applied it to her relationship. If the relationship is dead, and is causing more problems then not, it is meaningless. She tries so hard for him, yet he does not do anything in return. All of her fights and pleads (sound and fury) for him mean nothing if they are not used to learn from. I changed the meaning of the quote a bit, but it was to apply to the situation. She understood better, and thought I was being a "philosophical nerd," but took my advice and broke up with him.

My brother had been really ill, staying in bed for a whole day sleeping. He had finally started feeling better and left his bed, but still stayed home. My sister began joking with him, saying that he was going to get her sick with a deadly disease. She said she would haunt him if that happened, because she wouldn't get to go to prom or get married or do anything with her life. I then responded with the quote. She thought I was weird, being too dark for such a light conversation and affirmed with me that she was just kidding.

Quote in real life: With a teacher.

This was difficult because I didn't want to weird out the people who are responsible for my grades, but when a substitute came in for Mr. Bulette, I took the chance to use the quote. The substitute was very aloof, and a student talked back to her when she asked everyone to quiet down. I talked to her because my desk was near the teachers desk, and she began explaining why we should respect our teachers and take the class seriously. The substitute emphasized that high school determines the life ahead of us, to which I disagreed but did not voice my opinion much. Instead, I used the quote. She asked what I meant by that, to which I responded that life is meaningless and that we all will most likely have no impact. The substitute then responded that I need to be more positive and optimistic.

He killed, and received nothing out of it. Like Macbeth, he ended up in a place much worse than he had started in. Macbeth was loved, while the perpetrator was viewed rather kindly by those around him. Still they both killed and made nothing of themselves, just as the quotes symbolizes.

Obama had accomplished many things during his presidency. Then the next president, Donald Trump. was elected and had since then began erasing Obama's legacy. The trade deal, climate pact, and more had all been rejected. Donald Trump's presidency is the negation of Barack Obama's. Therefore, all of the hard work, meetings, and racist criticism is seemingly meaningless due to the determination of Trump to erase his legacy.

In response, he was kicked off his team and received major backlash. Recently many NFL players, teams, and coaches began protesting the anthem. Many are not doing it for the reasons he had in mind, but instead to protest Donald Trump. He lost his job, friends, reputation, and more, but still nothing is being done and police brutality is still a major issue.

Quote Connection: Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe.

Okonkwo, the main character in Thing Fall Apart, and Macbeth both share similar tragic stories. Both had once been highly respected men, showing leadership and loyalty to those around them. Okonkwo was a man who desired to be powerful and dominant, not showing his true emotions in order to still be considered masculine. He killed the boy he saw as his son, Ikemefuna, even when he was deeply hurting inside just to seem powerful. This is one of the many actions that connect to the sound and fury of the quote. Still, Okonkwo later becomes so depressed with his life and his failure that he hangs himself. The events of his life do not seem sufficient enough for others. When writing a novel about the experiences in Africa, the author decided, " One could almost write a whole chapter on him. Perhaps not a whole chapter but a reasonable paragraph, at any rate. There was so much else to include, and one must be firm in cutting out details. " (Page 74) Okonkwo's tragic downfall is only good enough for a paragraph in the novel, even though Okonkwo had done much for the community and had played an important role. Still, Okonkwo's hard work and downfall was for nothing, as he will not be recognized for it.

In this quote, Macbeth reflects on the life he has lived up to now. He calls himself an idiot, a fool for listening to the witches, and a fool for listening to his wife. His life is full of murder and wrongdoing, killing his kin, innocent mothers and children, and killing his best friend. All of it was for nothing. He is left in a worse position than he had begun with, and is all alone with the world against him. That original passion drove him to his death. The quote emphasizes that life is meaningless, such passion and drive one has in life does not guarantee happiness and success.
