One negative effect of gentrification i have witnessed is through people not being able to afford their rent in my curry. this means that they have to find more affordable housing which is becoming increasingly scarce & put kids in the school district i grew up in at risk of having to leave & go to a less well funded school district. One positive aspect i have seen is the ability for different types of people to be apart of my town. for a long time all people in my city looked the same, but as renting become a more widely available option, more people were able to more in & create a space of diversity. while this does not make up for all of the negative aspects of gentrification i believe it brings up an important idea of creating more diverse spaces within small communities.

madelyn trent

Examples of gentrification i’ve seen in my own city is how they have built new benches at bus stops but with rails and bumps so it’s not comfortable to sleep on. As well as in oceanside the new building of luxury resort hotels that have pushed locals out as well as because of that , the rent has gone up higher in those areas. It changes people’s lives who live there because this is where they were born and raised and for the community to be pushed out to the luxury look and the tourists coming in doesn’t make it feel like home anymore. This then increases their rent and cost of living and makes it harder for them to live in their hometown.

I’d say the city of San Marcos is a good example of gentrification. I’ve lived at the same place my whole life and the rent and home prices have gone up significantly and new, more modern housing continues to be built. I think on one side it’s good to see the city more modern and with new spots, yet it’s causing prices to rise until people are forced to move out. Socially I’d say people are definitely divided between upper and lower/middle class depending on what street of the city you’re on.

An example of gentrification that I have seen in my city is small family business being pushed out. I grew up in Chula Vista and now live in San Ysidro which are both old cities of San Diego that have experienced a lot of gentrification through businesses and homeownership. This has made it extremely difficult for Chula Vista and San Ysidro natives that grew up their whole lives there and are now being pushed out of their homes to make room for wealthy people. Although gentrification grows the city, it forgets about it those that originally live there.

Where my mom and I live in Orange County, Rancho Santa Margarita has seen a significant increase in housing prices over the years. For example, the value of my house has gone up drastically. I can see how this makes it harder for lower and middle-income families to afford housing, especially as the demand for housing increases. The city was originally developed with middle-class affordability in mind, but rising costs have shifted that to be more middle/upper and upper class.

I live in north park and over the last 4 years I have seen lots of examples of gentrification with new businesses coming in and buying out old establishments. Its is interesting though because about 30 percent of them have failed do to the price for products they're selling being too high and the business closes and that space that was once occupied and appreciated now sits empty.

I think this negatively impacts those who live there because they lose their original business that they may have liked and are left with nothing.

After investors bought out a bunch of houses and land, they now cost around 800k+ for the same house. Also, in San Jose and the bay area, there was a lot of factories or buildings that were destroyed and remodeled as completely new with more technology (apple).

These changes affect the people that live there by increasing housing prices and basically pushing them out.
