City Upon A Hill

"A City Upon a Hill" is a phrase derived from the teaching of Salt and Light in Jesus's Sermon on the Mount. In modern context it is used in the United States politics to refer to America acting as a "beacon of hope" for the world. Winthrop, the person behind the idea of "A City Upon a Hill" warned his fellow puritans that their new community would be "as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us." Meaning, if Puritans failed to hold their covenant with God, then their sins and errors would be exposed for all the world to see. The City was created in order to set an example for all of the Christians around the world.

The Puritans were members of a religious reform movement knows as Puritanism that arose within the Church of England in the late 16th century. They believe that the church of England was too similar to the Roman Catholic Church and should eliminate ceremonies and practices not rooted in the Bible. Puritans believed that God wanted everything to be pure. With this they built their own churches very simply. They even went on dressing very boring with the main colors they wore was black and white.

Calvinism is a major branch of Protestantism that follows the theological traditions and forms of Christian practice set down by John Calvin. It emphasizes the sovereignty of God and authority of the Bible. Important elements of Calvinism are the following: the authority of sufficiency of Scripture for one to know God and one's duties to God and one's neighbor. John Calvin is known for his influential Institutes of the Christian Religion, which was the first systematic theological treatise of the reform movement. Calvin and his followers were marked by strong emphasis on the sovereignty of God, the depravity of humankind, and the doctrine of predestination.

The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. More than two hundred people were accused. Thirty were found guilty, nineteen of whom were executed by hanging. The Picture above shows the Six women acting of being possessed after accusing a man of being a witch. Whenever he would get mad the girls would fake being possessed by the Devil. Everyone at the time believed them and didn't question if they were faking it or not.

The image above shows one of the witch trails being held in Salem, MA illustrating a women being falsely accused of being a witch. People back then believed so strongly of the devil that they believed that any negative energy was from the Devil or from a witch sending bad energy to them. A man accused this women of being a witch because he felt that she was doing summoning bad spells on him. During the witch trials if you decline of being a witch you would automatically be killed but if you admitted to being one you wouldn't be killed but everyone in town would avoid you. They wouldn't speak, buy from you, and you would just be seen as the Devil. So it was just a no-win situation if you were accused of being a witch.
