The theme dreams is often shown throughout Fences when Cory wants to play football he is being held back by his father. When Beneatha is wanting to become a doctor nobody is holding but she still has to face the fact that there are stereotypes and she doesn't meet the expectations of a doctor. To Troys father he does not make the expectations needed to become a football player. Troy wants his son to do the exact opposite thing he did. He doesn't want to see his son collecting trash he wants to see him be successful and he doesn't thing football will do this. When Walter wants to invest no one thinks this is a really good idea and everyone is holding him back but he doesn't care what they think and he goes for it anyway even if he fails. As you can see the book and the movie connect in numerous ways and more thank you think. They even connect character wise. One of the main characters Rose sacrificed all she ever wanted and all her dreams so she could make Troy happy. Then Troy was stingy and sacrificed his entire family relationship for a younger women he would soon have a child with. All the sacrifices made throughout the novel were huge. I chose dreams because the character I chose has big dreams wit the way she wants to take her life. There are many quotes that support this theme but the main one would be when Beneatha says “…But first I’m going to be a doctor, and George, for one, still thinks that’s pretty funny. I couldn’t be bothered with that. I’m going to be a doctor and everybody around here better understand that!” p. 50 This is the best quote because throughout the book Beneatha talk about her dreams and what she want to do with her life. Everyone else also has dream like wanting to move to a better house or location or owning businesses. When she says this I immediately think Beneatha. Throughout the book, Beneatha is always faced with negative comments on if she is capable of becoming a doctor or not. Behind Every Door (There's Another Door)
Is it a destination
or a quick walk on the sand?

This is a poem I feel best fits Beneatha. I say this because she seems to be the only one making big moves in the way her life is going. When she opens the door to college to become a doctor she knows there are soon coming doors that are going to be harder to open. Especially the word dream written so everyone can see very largely. There are so many things going on in Beneathas head but the one big thing she's staying focused on is her dreams. I say this because even people as close to her as Walter have no faith she can do it. This is shown when Walter says, “Who the hell told you-you have to be a doctor? If you so crazy ‘bout messing ‘round with sick people—then go be a nurse like other women—or just get married and be quiet…” p. 38. This quote shows exactly the negative things being said to 
Beneath when it comes to becoming a doctor but she will not let these things affect her dreams.

She goes to college to become a doctor. She wants to do more with her life and not just settle for becoming a nurse. Most of her family does not believe this is a good idea because she is a black woman in 1959. In this time you don't see as many black doctors as you do today.
