This book is about a child who immigrated to America and is now going to school. At school he was drawing a picture of his home in Somalia. At first he draws a house with a pretty sunset and everything looks nice and happy. Then he adds big flames to the roof and a man with a gun shooting his house. His teacher saw his drawing and the next day he got to talk to a lady who looked like his mother and spoke his language. They talked together about Hassan's experience in Somalia and how it was coming to America. This made Hassan feel much better and he drew a new picture for his mother of his home. This connects to the topic because it is telling the story of Hassan's immigrant experience.

This book shows the experiences a lot of people have being a refugee. It shows too how everyone's experience is different. It talks about why some people had to leave their countries. Some people are welcomed to new places with refugee camps and others try to shut them out and keep them away. It starts and ends talking about how a refugee is a person just like you and me. This connects to the topic because it is showing the experiences all of these people have trying to immigrate to other countries.

This book is about a girl named Unhei who is immigrating from Korea. When she first gets to her class none of her classmates can say her name correctly. She then decides that she is going to pick a different name to go by so she isn't so different from everyone in her class. When she goes to school the next day everyone in her class put names in a jar to help her get ideas and pick one. After this she shows a boy in her class the name stamp that her grandmother gave her with her name in Korean on it. Her classmates kept giving her name ideas but none of them felt right to her. She eventually decided she would keep her name and taught it to everyone in class. At the end of the book one of the other students got a name stamp for his name too. This connects to the topic because it shows the experience she had starting school after immigrating.

Eventually her family decides it is not safe to stay and decides to leave too. The rest of the story shows her journey getting to a new country. The theme of the story is about how even though they are leaving everything behind they still have their family. All of the pictures in the story are made out of stones. The book is also all written in English and Arabic. It connects to the topic because it tells about the girl's experience in her country and immigrating.

The topic I choose is immigrant experience. I think this is an important topic because a lot of children don't get a lot of information about immigrants and the hurdles they have to go through to get to our country. I also think it is helpful for children to see the experiences other children have in other countries and that they are not always bad. Additionally I believe knowing more about it would help children to be more accepting to immigrants and new students in their classroom.

She grew up in Korea and currently lives in New York City. Along with being an author she is an illustrator and has spent a lot of time drawing with children in local shelters, mountain villages in the Himalayas, a Bedouin community in the Arabian desert, an underground shelter for North Korea refugee children in China, and an orphanage in Cambodia. I think this adds to the authenticity because she is an immigrant herself and has had a lot of experience working with refugee children.
