Sport is not just about participation. It is also part of the commercial world, managed and marketed to make money. Sponsorship and the media are now significant influences on sport. The symbolic coin is used to describe this relationship for example the sports and media would not work the how well they work today if the other one did not help balance it out.

Sport
Sport benefits from commercialism. Increased revenue helps individual sportspeople and sports organisations to increase participation, improve performances and attract support. As technology becomes an increasingly important element of sport and sports compete with each other to engage participants and spectators, funding is even more crucial.

Media
The media benefits from the commercialization of sport. High profile sports stories help to attract audiences, listeners and readers. In turn, the media makes sure that sport keeps a high profile.

Sponsors
Sponsors benefit from the commercialization of sport. Their funding is essential for sport’s growth. In return, high profile coverage of sport ensures a high profile for their companies and products. In this way, sport – particularly elite sport, the media and sponsorship are interlinked. This is called the golden triangle.

Fan Costs

One of the main problems with increased commercialisation from a fan's perspective is the feeling the increased costs are passed on to them. Ticket prices, refreshments and team shirt prices have all gone up at the same time more and more advertising space is sold around the stadium and television rights are sold for almost every game.

Player Distraction

It has been claimed in some sports that commercialisation results in poorer player performance at international levels. For example the underperformance of the England soccer team despite the domestic Premier League having the highest wages of any soccer league in the world. Commercialisation also offers a distraction from the game as the top name players are singed up by major labels to promote products.

Sport and sponsors are two sides of the same coin effecting one another tipping each other into balance and unbalance, this results in them gaining something from each other both positive and negative. This means that they need to rely on each other in order to be as successful as possible. The result of these sponsors in sports is it provides sports, athletes, and events with money they they invest into infrastructure such as charities increasing involvements in sports, buying better equipment, improve facilities increase staff in sports increasing players, staff, and coaches, and this money they create forms a business that can sell merchandise making more profit, this can then be used as to improve the prizes people get from events.
