Where is the Launch Pad?

The launch pad is wherever is the best place for the show. In a zombie apocalypse you wouldn’t tell your students about this terrifying event in a boring classroom! You would get them all huddled together with another class possibly in a bigger area to allow for maximum impact of the performance!

Leaks: Up to two weeks prior to launch, teacher can ‘leak’ information in an effort to build interest. In addition, ‘leaks’ may allow students to consider if they have the necessary skills that will be prerequisite for the project.

Practice: The ‘launch-leader’ should practice the launch story several times prior to the presentation to the students. The launch should be appear to be ‘natural’ in that it is a byproduct of the teacher’s personality.

In addition, it would be beneficial to give the launch to peers/adults and petition their feedback on how to improve the launch. However, keep in mind that the ‘launch’ is to be targeted at the students, not the adults.

Typically once launch day comes, the actual presentation will be short and to the point. Between 3 and 15 minutes!

Mission Control - Launch Team and Roles

Launch Leader - This is the person that delivers the hook to the entire group. This person should be able to relate the story to the students, and bring high energy to the launch, engaging the students as the story or mystery comes to life. This person is part entertainer/showman/salesman.
Launch Support Team - These are other adults in the room: teacher aides, paras, administrators, parent volunteers, collaborating teachers. These support team members interact with students as the launch leader is sharing the mission. They show shock, excitement, or amazement as the tasks and events are being laid out. They know where this is going, but need to play their role to support the launch leader. This group is vital with students who like to “see behind the curtain”. The launch support team encourages these students to give their permission to let the process move forward by this group.
