Nigger Head Tobacco??

Here is one of the strangest adverts that I have come across. The term Nigger Head was once widely used for all sorts of things, including nautical bollards[3][4] and consumer products including soap, chewing tobacco, stove polish, canned oysters and shrimp, golf tees, and toy cap pistols, among others. Luckily, under pressure from the NAACP in the early 1960's, many companies dropped the clearly racist term from their advertising.

The Chinese Must Go.

Believe it or not, this is actually an advertisement for soap. That is what Uncle Sam is holding in his left hand. Of course I would have never known this without looking it up since it just seems like a disgustingly intolerant propaganda piece. I'm assuming that this cartoon was circulated around the time that rabid anti-Chinese sentiment reached an all time high in Portland in 1885-1886

This ad is stating that the Chinese want higher wages for less work, are a burden on "civilized" society, and are drunks who cannot be trusted. Naturally this ad is encouraging people to vote on legislation to ban the "evil" Chinese.
