First Supreme Court Case

1954 In the case Hernandez v. The State of Texas, the Supreme Court recognizes that Latinos are suffering inequality and profound discrimination, paving the way for Hispanic Americans to use legal means to fight for their equality. This is the first Supreme Court case briefed and argued by Mexican American attorneys.

Nichols, the U.S. Supreme Court reaffirms the 1970 memorandum, ruling students' access to, or participation in, an educational program cannot be denied because of their inability to speak or understand English. Although this action was initiated by Chinese-speaking Protestants, it benefited the Hispanic immigrant community in particular.

As a Latino immigrant I have never felt denied my rights because of my race or origin. I feel very grateful to those who fought and continue to fight for the rights of Latinos, as well as to the United States for giving me new opportunities and a better life.
