Honey has always been a prized possession, and has mostly been used for religion. Wild honey was the only type available until the second millennium BC in Egypt. The first man made beehive wasn't made till 1789 by Francois Huber, and not until 1880 was beekeeping commercialized. As of right now there are five million beehives in America alone. The people that maintain these hives are called apiculturist.

Collecting honey requires skill. Getting stung is almost a given, but a professional keeper may shun away protective gear and move slowly but with a purpose and only receive a few stings. Beekeepers remove the wax caps that cover each cell of the comb and let the cells' contents drip out by gravity, or they use a specialized machine to spin the frames and draw the comb contents out by centrifugal force. The honey is then filtered and stored. In man made hives and real hives, bees have 6 mm of room between honeycomb.
