Thus, genome sequencing has the potential to improve the ability to act preventively prior to disease development or to begin treatment for a disease that has not yet been diagnosed. For instance, for people suffering from a life-threatening condition, DNA sequencing can provide a precise diagnosis that can influence medical management of symptoms or provide treatment options.

The power of genomic information is compounded each time a genome sequence is obtained for an additional member of a family, especially when this occurs across generations. Direct comparisons of genome sequences of relatives for whom DNA variation is shared can infer inheritance patterns. Each additional genome sequence can make the interpretation of genomic variation easier. Therefore, genome sequence information is of value not only to the individual undertaking the procedure, but also to immediate family members and direct descendants. Such information should be treasured and safeguarded by families whose members have chosen to investigate their genomes.

This science breakthrough allows us to determine genetic properties of various organisms which helps us in different ways such as; in viruses- we are able to learn the most important things about it such as from where it came from and how to eliminate them or at least create a solution to prevent us from acquiring it; in humans- we may use it in crime scenes, parent-offspring confirmation, etc.; and DNA sequencing may also be used as powerful proof of the theory of evolution.

the order of nucleic acid residues in biological samples is an integral component of a wide variety of research applications. Over the last fifty years large numbers of researchers have applied themselves to the production of techniques and technologies to facilitate this feat, sequencing DNA and RNA molecules. This time-scale has witnessed tremendous changes, moving from sequencing short oligonucleotides to millions of bases, from struggling towards the deduction of the coding sequence of a single gene to rapid and widely available whole genome sequencing. This article traverses those years, iterating through the different generations of sequencing technology, highlighting some of the key discoveries, researchers, and sequences along the way.
