These are my initial ideas for the fire starters brief. I want to try and find something that will appeal to a wide audience.

From what I can find there wasn't a lot for the younger age range on headspace. As I'm looking at making comics for fruit winders it needs to be more of a 3-12 age range as they are mainly used as a lunchbox snack.

The next place I looked at for mental health help for kids was 'young minds'. Young minds has a lot more resources for young people but it still isn't aimed at primary school children. I want to find something that is more cartoon based and fun as a way to help children.

This is the Pips kit cartoon. I really like the cartoon itself and think its a really great way of showing children how to cope with their emotions.

The website itself has different sections that make it easy to navigate. It teaches the main emotions children may feel (sad, angry, scared, grumpy, happy/calm, quiet, tired, guilty, lonely, helpless, embarrassed, confused, numb, jealous). It then gives ways of coping and exercises you can do.

There are online activities, downloadable activities and buyable activities. There are lots and lots of resources for young children to learn how to deal with their emotions.

The old comic strips were quite violent, they depicted fruit crushing other fruits. This was on the tv adverts and the actual comic strips that the fruit winders came on, they have recently created new comics.

The most recent comics have jokes and facts and are a lot more watered down and targeted to the right market. I want my design to reflect the same kind of layout and style but use the pips imagery.

Looking at the packaging of the actual winder, I feel that it might not need too much rebranding as it's such a small amount of packaging.

This is a first rough draft. I want to do the comic and the box. I think that 2 emotions and some coping mechanisms will fit on one of the comics. There are multiple emotions on the website so there could be multiple comics done for each box.

The comic strip paper measures 64cm x 3.5cm

Children need sufficient intervention at an early age in order to help them with their mental health. I myself was a child that had depression left untreated for years, this caused damage that then took me years to repair once I started getting the proper help. Some parents refuse to believe their child is ill, or even the parents are the cause we have no idea the kinds of home lives some children experience; by having such an easily accessible resource such as the comics in fruit winders could be such a huge thing in a Childs life that they can understand and relate to. If a child sees themself in Pip, they can learn and grow from it. It could also help the parents understand as it is a fun and informative cartoon.

The target age range for fruit winders is 6-12 so it falls within the right age range that I'd like to target for mental health help. Some younger children may also be able to benefit from seeing the imagery but they can't read so I need to make the imagery understandable.

I started off with basic images on a plain background as I will be able to edit everything afterwards but then I felt that it needed a more plain background and decided to use packaging paper. I felt the colour of the packaging paper worked well with the images too.

I took various images and changed them to fit the narrative that I wanted. For this one I moved the arms and added a pillow so that it would be them screaming into the pillow.

This one I thought it would be good to reference the fruit winder as the thing that makes Pip happy.

The name fits in well with the berry theme (Pip, like a seed)

This one, I used the element of Pip hugging the teddy and made it more recognisable as a hug by adding the second arm to wrap around the teddy.

First I made the comics in photoshop, with the images, a simple layout and the text. Then I drew over everything else in procreate.

I had to edit the imperfections from the box in photoshop, just removing all of the dints and bumps then enhancing the colour and smoothing the background a bit too. This way I had a flat canvas to work with digitally.

I tried this in a few different places, then ended up moving the whole Kellogg logo over so that the pips kit logo would better fit

I moved the green sections and the 5 rolls bit down on the box so that Pips arm would fit on the box better.

I then changed it to strawberry, looking back now I'm not sure why I changed it to just strawberry so I'd definitely leave it if I was to do it again, really not sure what my thought process was here...

This was an initial mock-up idea, I wanted it to be a lot simpler than this and easier to read because the final canvas would be so small, there was way to much writing and it was far too small

Try to find a way to add the comic to the winder sheet was difficult due to its size. To do so I cut the comic into separate sections then overlayed them onto the winder paper.

I tried to find a font that was as close to the fruit winder font that I could find. Where I could, I copied and pasted letters from other sections of the box so that the font would be the same (I did this in the crossword and on the 'unwind your feelings') but the rest I used this font I found on da font. If it was to be released commercially it would obviously have to be fruit winders actual font.

I copied and pasted these letters in order to change them then colour corrected, I also added emotions onto the end of the text.

This is one of the comics after I'd done the drawings over the top, this way my fonts were consistent but had a little more of a handwritten feel. I also used a font that was as close to the Pips kit font as I could find.

I added a strawberry to Pip because the flavour of the winder is strawberry, now thinking about it I think that's why I changed the flavour on the box to just strawberry but really I probably should have just got a strawberry flavour box or added a pear into his arms too, I just liked the idea of strawberry because his name is Pip

Pip peeking onto the crossword, I added lots of little bits like this to make sure the theme came across quite strong and didn't just look the exact same as every other fruit winder box. I also wanted to add the elements to the existing design rather than re-design the whole box to keep that recognisable branding showing, this keeps a strong sense of collaboration and not re branding.

I re did the questions on the crossword so that some would be relevant to Pips coping strategies but also keep some as they already were. This meant I had to change a few of the letters in the crossword (don't do the crossword because I don't think I actually matched it all up properly, I'd have had to re do the whole crossword and didn't have the time whoops)

This was the first submission document, I sent it over to Mark for advice on what I could do better and he suggested showing off the comics more, less text and to lead with my products rather than the info so I re did the document and submitted the new one.

I removed the black text and images using clone and stamp tools. This gave me the blank canvas I needed but still had the fruit winder on it too
