Below (appendix 7 and 8) are plans we created just before reading week to see the overall image we had of the piece so far. Appendix 7 is a short and rough timeline of each section we wanted in chronological order, so that we could visualise what we needed to choreograph over the break, who would be in charge of what section and how we wanted the production of the show to turn out. Appendix 8 is more of a timeline for the lead up to the show, so that by each week we can have a plan going forward and stay on track during the process.

Over my half term I had decided to find a song for the opening jazz company section of the piece. As it is supposed to be set in the 80’s I looked at iconic artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Queen and Prince. As well as 80’s musicals like: 42nd street, flash dance, and cats to be able to gain some inspiration for the overall energy I wanted the piece to receive.

After watching MJ the musical live on the West End, I was completely drawn in by the 80’s jazz that was being presented in each piece. It set the scene and time of what the 80’s era was, which is something I wanted to bring out from the beginning. This was definitely what inspired my section and allowed me to bring my vision to life as the opening number. Michael Jackson was an iconic artist in the 80's world wide within music and dance, his distinguishable style should hopefully take the audience back in time using my auditory stimulus.

Jazz funk includes lot of technical jazz elements as well as grooves within the body. We wanted to include lots of repetition and canons as well as group contact work. This allows us to act our way through the dance, looking like we are enjoying the class and the introduction to the 90's era. It also foreshadows the group contact work in the darker contemporary section of Jaded. The dynamic and emotion change will hopefully be more impactful due to these opposing first sections.

When creating the music we realised there was a gap before the main contemporary section. Having a duet would separate a lot of the company sections and allow more of the storyline to become more visible to the audience with intimate acting and partner sections.

We wanted to play on the height difference within the choreography to show Michael as a metaphor. He is the burn out that is carrying me through the piece as he lifts me up and I lean on him. We wanted it to be up to interpretation to the audience, however this was the feeling and interpretation of burn out we wanted within the duet. The contact work also represents the community and relationships that come forward when working together in training. As dancers we can rely on each other to help, therefore we felt the elevation and quality of stillness would allow this to come through.

We wanted it to represent a mountain, where I am climbing up it until I fall, showing the 'giving up section' of burn out. The process of this took a lot of communication and trust. As you can see we started on her back before the shoulders to get the technique correctly and to ensure no one was hurt in the process. Although this lift worked and followed the storyline of the piece, we unfortunately didn't have time to put this into the ending section. We felt it looked rushed and it didn't flow well with the storyline and where we were positioned for our ending.

We felt that this took inspiration from the film Honey as it represented the 2000's fashion/music and dance industry clearly throughout. We used choreography with contrast of feminine and masculine movement, as well as tactile choreography between the two partners. The input I had in her rehearsal allowed her to view the choreography clearly whilst she used me as example for the other dancers.

Between Mya's and Neve's piece we decided to create a transition that links the end of my acting section to her peice 'Fade'. Using contrasting dynamics, we wanted to hit each moment in the song to emphasise the storyline, however we also wanted the movement to be minimal and have more acting involved. In order to play on exhaustion we wanted to set the movement and go back later to try and input more of the narrative, instead of dancing constantly. We came up with the vision, but we have decided we will work on this later into the process and develop our acting more.

Here is some notes I had written to start working on my acting section.

As a strong dancer, I felt I needed to plan and write out emotions to portray this section of the piece to enhance my acting and not rely on movement. My acting solo includes themes of body dysmorphia and mental health, so I wanted to use physical touch and connection. This not only helped me to make the acting more realistic, but also allowed the audience to make the connection between body image and how this impacts a dancer in training with the use of our metaphorical mirror.

During our contemporary duet we felt we could try a more unique way of putting on the t shirt to symbolise ‘giving in to the burn out and exhaustion’. Allowing yourself to feel those emotions rather than pretending to be ok. Changing this meant we could both feel more emotional in the piece and have a meaning behind the t shirt. This was one of the final main changes I had made before the final performance and was grateful that myself and Michael had decided to look at this duet to further explore emotionally as well as physically.

As a group, we had discussed my solo involving some form of acting that represented Body Dysmorphia. Fortunately, I hadn’t experienced this type of mental illness that lots of dancers go through specifically during training. I decided to research what the causes and affects of body dysmorphia were, so that I could keep the performance clear and respectful to viewers. It also allowed me to create some sort of plan/ idea of what to do with my hands/posture etc as acting isn’t my strong point.

Through reading a journal I found that body Dysmorphia Disorder (BDD) is a very common disturbance in a dancers training and career, it’s a mental disorder that can cause depression and anxiety. Holmes (2013) states that it can cause dancers to avoid dancing as the mirror is a constant reminder that everyone can see you, and further lead into burn out not just through dance, but in everyday life.

“For dancers with body dysmorphic disorder, reality doesn’t match what they see in the mirror”

Using this information, I wanted to play on the use of the metaphorical mirror (the audience). As a way of signifying that I am alone and feeling insecure. I used lots of contact with myself, ensuring I looked through the audience rather than at them.

This was a challenge for me as it not only contrasted with the previous number in the piece but it was mentally challenging to act, however I am happy with the outcome.

These were things: that interested me, I questioned, I found important, or just a concept I could see myself portraying in. This specific series uses elements of original history combined with current and modern costumes/music/ setting, which is what I loved most. Rather than taking part of the Kaos storyline, I wanted to then start researching different Greek myths for myself but take the Modern element of what Kaos inspired me with initially.

To begin my research I found that Pandoras Box was a specifically interesting myth created to tell the tale of a woman (first on earth) who was given many gifts by the greek gods. However, these gifts were inside of a box she was told she wasn't ever allowed to open. After being tortured with curiosity she opened the box, 'succumbed to temptation' (Atkinson 2014) to find herself opening sin and releasing it to the world. Panicked, she closed the box to trap all hope inside of it.

This myth stood out to me as I felt I could not only tell it alone, but one that would challenge me creatively to use props and music I had never worked with before.

To begin I decided to create a Spotify playlist for inspiration. I usually use an auditory stimulus to allow me to maintain the theme and storyline without steering away from my concept. When choreographing, I like to use music to influence my movement and felt this playlist would allow me to try and create movement that fits to my theme. The music was heavily instrumental, I liked the whole piece not using any lyrics as I felt that using classical music fit the ancient greek theme with its royal and regal energy. There is also lots of modern contemporary music in there too, as the majority of my dancing will be contemporary. (freyab, 2025)

To begin, I wanted to have my music set and ready before I started choreographing to have an idea of where to plan each setting and scene. I started using my playlist, mixing songs of classical music however, I found the song Runaway (Orchestral version) by Aurora fit the brief and concept very well. Although I wanted only instrumental music in the background, I found merging both this song and my original idea allowed me to create more developed and deeper concepts as the lyrics to Runaway fit the storyline perfectly.

"I can't take it anymore" - the desire to open the box

"Climbing my way in a tree I saw a piece of heaven waiting impatient for me" -the nature and greek mythical concept that is run through out

"Take me home where I belong"- The need to put the box back after opening it

We began by doing a lot of acting and freestyle in the park in the costume to trial out the weather, the hair and skirt, the setting including the trees etc to ensure I liked and saw my vision come to life. Fortunately, I loved the setting and found it fitted perfectly to what I initially envisioned. However, it was a struggle capturing my best movement due to having barefoot in a woodland area. I also struggled with the public and finding quiet times to film in the sun, which meant trying to be patient when filming, trying to avoid capturing the public in each video.

A lot of the opening movement is freestyled as I wanted it to feel/look free before she begins to encounter the box, however as I started to choreograph around the box I used a lot of my auditory stimulus to guide me. Specifically, her lyrics and the orchestra behind her motivated me with each movement. I used the box in a lot of my choreography to emphasise the storyline and my characters desperation. With devices of fragmentation, embellishment and textures.

Creating the 'darker' section (opening of the box) meant using a darkened room. I loved my choice of lighting and felt the costume matched perfectly. My choice of movement reflected the scene, being that I used hard hitting dynamics to emphasise the chaos my character feels. This was my favourite part of the process, as it felt very smooth sailing and enjoyable to perform to a camera.

I did this by repeating sections of choreography where the camera is above/below/beside me rather than just front facing.

Something I would change within my solo, was my skirt. It was extremely restricting and therefore made me change my choreography due to not having enough space to dance. Thus limiting my choreography and creativity. (see above video)

I would also try to play around with more times of day (night/day/sunset/sunrise) as well as weather (pouring rain, sun, fog, lightning) as I feel this would have developed the greek mythology narrative further, due to their myths/legends and beliefs involving lots of weather reflecting the mood (pathetic fallacy).
