There was once my mother and I did composting in our garden.She taught how to compost and the importance of composting. My mother also told me that earthworms help with composting because they eat the uncomposted food and it comes out of them as waste. This acts as fertiliser for plants.

2.Last year during ALP, we sorted food from waste and made the food into fertiliser for composting.

When my family goes to the super market weekly to buy our utilities, we always bring a reusable bag as we can save money and reduce our usage of plastic bags.

I save water by reusing kitchen water to water the plants and save it by offing the tap when I brush my teeth.

Second example is related to reusing of water.After washing your rice,we can use that water to wash clothes and water the plants.

Third example is related to donating old books.After reading the books,we should not throw it away but we should sell or donate the books.

Growing up, I used to have a lot of books that my parents had bought for me. Usually after finishing the book, we will donate unwanted books away to get more storage for new books. There is a library near our house that has a shelf for unneeded book for us to donate. You can also go there to collect books other people had donated.

My parents always cook and after we wash the vegetable we will use the leftover water to water our plants to prevent us from wasting water. We will also use expired food as fertiliser for our plants.

Whenever my parents and I go out, we always switch of the lights as we do not want to waste electricity. During day time, we always switch off the light as the sun is already a source of light.

Last year, my school organised a garden composting activity during ALP. ALP is a learning programme that takes place at 25th of February every year. This ALP learning programme was based on composting. My teacher asked me and my classmates to bring leftover food to our school for composting.

Composting is a way to reduce waste . It is an action where you take wasted food and transform it into fertiliser for plants and soil .

During this program, we went through the process and steps of composting. We also learnt how worms help with the process of composting.The process starts with putting the wasted food into a cylindrical container with plants we planted around it . During the week of waiting , the wasted food actually helped the plants to grow !

Now we were going through the real process of composting! We took all the food out and started mixing them together . After we were done , we put the wasted food into a composting machine to break down . After another week , it finally got turned into fertiliser! By Arissa , Zhi Ning and Annabelle .

I felt really happy and grateful that I could learn more about the environment and how we can help to make it a good one .

There was once,my mother was washing the rice.After that,she wanted to pour out the excess water away. I immediately stopped her and suggested that she save the water. She followed my instructions and used a sieve to separate the rice from the water. She then used the water to water the plants.

Saving water is important because Singapore has a limited amount of water.Water is very precious in our land.

As such, I think reducing waste is important because we can save a lot of resources.

For example, we learnt how to sort waste into different categories and that earthworms can help us to compost waste into fertiliser for plants.

Another way our school teaches us to reduce waste is that they put handmade posters up in the canteen telling us that we could bring our own reusable cutlery to reduce plastic, order less when buying food if we are not hungry.

As such, my school has organised two programs to reduce waste.

For example, there was once my mother was washing rice and she was going to pour it the water into the sink. Suddenly, I remembered the lesson I learnt from school which was about reducing waste and one of the examples they talked about was reusing water. I quickly told my mother not to pour the water into the sink because it could be used for watering plants.

I would also like to try composting my waste as it may to save the planet. If we do not compost our waste the Semakau Landfill will be full of waste.

As such, I would like to reduce waste in different ways. I hope that more people will reduce waste more often.

This program was organised to encourage students to help to make a clean and safe environment with no waste .

We had to collect plastic bottles and the first class in the level will be rewarded with a fast pass for Children’s Day . I thought that this program was a good initiative to teach students like us . The school used a reward system to get the students to be more interested. This program definitely encouraged me to participate in more programs about the environment and to reduce waste .

Apart from collecting bottles, our school also organised a program ALP . It helped us learn more about about composting by using wasted food and worms .

Overall , our school organised ALP and Collecting bottles to educate us on reducing waste and how to keep and clean and safe environment.
