         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>The country of Malta became independent from Britain and joined the Commonwealth in 1964 and was declared a republic on December 13, 1974.</li><li><mark>Roman Catholicism</mark> is a major influence on Maltese culture.</li><li>Malta’s population is composed almost entirely of ethnic Maltese, the descendants of ancient Carthaginians and Phoenicians as well as of <mark>Italians</mark> and other Mediterranean people.</li><li>Aside from the Maltese population, there are small communities of British nationals, Sindhis, Palestinians, and Greeks on the islands.</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Maltese English (<mark>“MaltE”</mark>) is a postcolonial English variety spoken on the Mediterranean island-nation of Malta by <mark>Maltese-English</mark> bilinguals. According to the 2005 census, English is spoken by 318,354 Maltese residents, or 87.9% of the population; Maltese is reported as being spoken by 97.9% of the population.</li><li>MaltE is the main language in independent and <mark>church schools</mark> and at <mark>the University</mark> of Malta.</li><li>Both languages are used in the workplace to varying degrees.<mark> MaltE</mark> exhibits deviations from <strong><em>British and American</em></strong> varieties at all levels of linguistic structure, it displays structural regularity conditioned by linguistic, social, and stylistic factors, and shows influence from <em>Maltese and Italian.</em></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Queen Elizabeth II used to frequently holiday in Malta &amp; spent what she called, <em><mark>the happiest years of her life</mark></em> living in Villa Guardamangia</li><li>She first came to <a href="https://airmalta.com/en/the-maltese-islands/valletta">Valletta</a> shortly after the end of the Second World War, in 1949 and set up home in the beautiful Villa Guardamangia</li><li>She even celebrated her 24<sup>th</sup> and 25<sup>th</sup> birthdays there.</li><li>The Queen liked the fact that she could live in Malta quite happily without the intense media attention and furor that she received in the UK. In fact, she described it as the only place where she felt she could live <em>normally</em>.</li></ul>]]></description>
