The reason that I have chosen to do Black Metal for my project, is that it is not just my favourite genre but the essence of my being and is a spiritual expression. I will succeed at this because it is the one thing I focus all of my energy into and what i love the most in this world, if I choose to practise and develop my playing, there is no thing that can stand in front of me, as I channel everything I feel into this. It becomes charged with my energy and will.

My strengths are finger control, which I am currently working on I saw a drum cam of a drummer named "Dominator" and I was really impressed and inspired by his speed and control, this is the reason that I decided to work on it. I have improved from practising single strokes on my practise pad. I need to improve on my double pedal speed because my stamina isn't so good.

For this project i will need to work on my organisation as I have never been the person to organise things like rehearsals and other things relating to this. This is the biggest thing for me, because in the past I have been very disorganised and messy, so it's a fitting time to change that.

Another skill that i have had to develop is my ensemble skills, playing with another musician, timing has not been my problem, perhaps it has been my communicating skills, i have improved a lot, but there is more to get better at in this area.

I have also chosen to transcribe the two songs that i am doing for my project, i have never transcribed before so i it has certainly provided some challenges, but i have learned a lot so far. I will post them into my research portfolio.

For my research, I will carry out in depth history and contextual understanding Black Metal. I will go over the scenes who inspired the first and second wave scenes and what the result that came out of them was, this will include ; A history of the scenes ; Important bands ; myths that gave a notorious reputation to many of them and summing the evolution up with today's Black Metal Scene. I will also create a primary research questionnaire.

A notable secondary source that I used is Dayal Patterson's "Black metal : Evolution Of The Cult" book, it is a great secondary source because he has done a ton of interviews with many notable bands within the first and second waves of black metal and compiled and huge wealth of information regarding their origins and stories.

Some primary sources that have shed light on a lot for me were interviews with artists on youtube and also live performances.

Gorgoroth - Profetens Åpenbaring live https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OeikcMvVZM

Speaking with guitarists and other drummers, I now understand that it is the drummer that keeps the time of the playing together and that the guitarists and the vocalist work off the drums. If the drums are off time then the whole song will go wrong. The inner ear metronome makes sure that the drums stay on time.

We are playing our parts well individually

The three areas to improve are:

We tried too hard in this session

We did not play very well together

Our timing was off

This session was disappointing but better we do it now than in our final performance.

When I decided which songs to do, I looked for the drum scores for both songs but there were none so I decided to write them. It was very difficult because I have never done this before. I started doing it manually which was difficult and time consumming and someone said that Sibelius was easier. I got Sibelius and found this very difficult also but I taught myself and it got easier. The main mistake I was making was that I was trying to work out each bar at a time with all of the bass drums, the pauses, the breaks, the drums and the cymbals before doing the next bar. I realised after doing Gorgoroth that if I did one layer at a time that it would be easier and it was. The Bathory song was complicated but when I did the bars and the bass drum layer first and then inputed the breaks and pauses and then added the other layers, it was much easier and faster. I was very relieved to get it done but I learned a lot that will help me in the future. I know that when I get better and more confident with Sibelius and writing scores, I will be able to do all the layers for each bar at the same time and move on to the next bar.

Performance Interviews

I made a list of questions to get a lot of information but when I did it for myself, it took way too long and it was a bit exhausting to be honest ... even I got bored and I wrote the questions!!! There was no way I could do this to another performer, they would just fall asleep!! Instead, I had to go back and start again. I came up with a single page of questions that I was happy to ask Eamon. (see Eamon's question sheet and interview in Task 3&4 at the bottom of the research page.)
