I have an older sister in year 12 (at GIHS) and a younger sister in year 2 (at St Joseph)

My interests are reading and doing hair. I also enjoy watching movies, and shopping.

One of my passions is cooking, I love discovering new cuisines from different countries. I also enjoy playing basketball but I had to stop last year. Something that makes my blood boil is the mistreatment of others facing wars, especially children. This is currently evident in Congo, Palestine, and parts of China as well. The deaths of innocent people makes me want to make a change

The concept of plausibility was a tool created in 1988 that allowed us to think about different possible futures. It divides scenarios into 4 categories; things that could happen, things that are likely to happen, a wide range of possibilities, and the vision of what we want to happen. This article was interesting as it allows us to regularly think about the future and certain outcomes in different cases.

My partner was Aria and her problem was that she couldn't sleep at camp because of her friend's snoring habits. We came up with various solutions through worksheets and ways we could reach the ultimate goal of how she could fall asleep. We collaborated together as well as communicated on different ideas and solutions for htis task.

Especially following us at night or even just wandering around the area. A collective solution we came up with was to implement more hostile architecture in the area to prevent wanderers. Hostile Architecture is changes made in public furniture such as benches that purposefully restrict actions. In this case, restricting homeless people from lingering around. Above is an example.

This can be done through better communication skills as we can communicate when we are going do things and have a set out plan.

This helped me make more connections to people in the class especially after the 2 classrooms came together.

Collaboration - The most evident 'C' used in this task was Collaboration as we had to work together to create our video and script. Our team worked well in this area as we finished everything when needed and overall was happy with our result.

Critical Thinking - Critical Thinking was evident through this task as we had to create a problem and solution to a problem in councils and schools. Even though it's tough to create an innovative Idea, we came up with something good after a lot of research.

Creativity - Relating to critical thinking, Creativity was evident in this task through the choices of problems, solutions, and prototypes. We made a small prototype of our idea (TreeTreats) and made a label on Canva to show our product. This required creativity.

Citizenship - This task shows citizenship as we identified several problems around Councils and schools. We recognized that these problems are damaging to the environment and therefore, made solutions to it. Recognizing problems around the area affects our citizenship as we strive to think of ways to reduce it.

We started to create a shortlist of the problems that we found most interesting. A problem listed was ocean pollution, as it is a major problem in our world. However, we got some feedback from the teachers and came up with more problems that we could relate to more. We then conducted some more extensive research on these problems.

Consider the following questions:

Where is it a problem?

Ocean pollution is a global problem, affecting oceans and seas worldwide, with areas near densely populated coastal regions and major shipping routes experiencing higher levels of pollution.

Who does it affect?

It affects marine life, including fish, seabirds, turtles, and marine mammals, disrupting ecosystems and biodiversity. Additionally, it impacts coastal communities that rely on oceans for food and recreation.

Why is it happening? (Think of all the causes and associated problems)

The causes of ocean pollution include industrial activities, such as oil spills, chemical discharge, and plastic waste from manufacturing. Agricultural runoff, sewage discharge, and improper waste disposal contribute to nutrient pollution and harmful algal blooms. Furthermore, plastic pollution from single-use plastics, microplastics from clothing, and abandoned fishing gear worsen the problem. Inadequate waste management and lack of environmental regulations also contribute to ocean pollution.

A problem was that the car may lose balance and that it is not efficient or doable so another solution was that each car would have to repel magnets and machines that are programmed to stop when sensing a potential attack.

This is a good activity to help critically analyse different problems and how they can be solved. It can also help for future work especially in this innov8 course.

What is the problem?

The issue we came up with was paper straws easily being dissolved in our drinks. This makes it not only hard to drink but also makes the drink less enjoyable from constantly readjusting the straw. Plastic straws are not biodegradable which is why there was a significant switch from plastic straws to paper. Due to the significant rates of pollution, plastic straws were another threat to marine life and the ocean. Metal straws were a substitute for a while, however there are high chances of bacteria infections from the remains of food particles. There also is an unlikely switch - especially in food stores - from paper straws to metal due to the cost of manufacturing them.

Who does it affect?

It is very frustrating when the straw itself get soggy and fall apart. There are forever chemicals in the paper straws too, which means they are not 100% sustainable. As a customer who buys straws in bulk they should take to account that people will take 2 paper straws. The first straw is used until it cannot be used meaning it starts to fall apart, then people use the 2nd straw that they got at the start.

One of Australia's biggest achievements and sightseeing destinations is the Great Barrier Reef which is slowly being destroyed by the ongoing issues in ocean pollution. The article from WWF Australia mentions that the Reef's health has deteriorated substantially during the last 30 years. Coastal development, pollution, and human involvement all pose significant hazards to species and the environment. As a result, the Reef has experienced several massive occurrences.

Although there are edible straws on the market, most of them contain bovine gelatin. We substituted this ingredient with agar gels - derived from plants - which makes our product more use-friendly (vegan+halal) we also added carnauba wax which is partially waterproof, meaning out product can be more durable.

Substitute: Replace the materials used in traditional plastic straws with biodegradable substances that can be safely eaten by marine life if they end up in the ocean. For example, use seaweed-based materials instead of plastic or paper.

Combine: Merge the edible straw with another product to enhance its appeal or functionality. For instance, flavor the straws to complement the drinks they are used with, like a lemon-flavored straw for iced tea.

Adapt: Look at how similar problems have been solved in other industries or contexts. Adapt a solution from the food industry, such as the way ice cream cones are both edible and functional, to make straws that can be eaten after use.

Modify: Change the shape or properties of the straw. For example, design the straws with a thicker wall so they can double as stirrers or make them with different textures to appeal to children and encourage their use.

Put to Another Use: Consider other uses for the edible straw after its initial use. Perhaps the straw could be designed to break apart and be used as plant fertilizer, or if made from certain materials, it could serve as fish food.

Eliminate: Remove elements that are not eco-friendly or necessary. For instance, eliminate any non-biodegradable packaging for the straws, or simplify the manufacturing process to reduce waste and energy consumption.

Reverse: Look at the problem from a different perspective. Instead of focusing on making straws less harmful, consider how they could actively benefit the environment. For example, infuse the straws with seeds that, if they end up in the soil, can grow into plants that are beneficial for local ecosystems.

I found this article interesting as it relates a bit to our problem. Single-use plastic sachets are causing significant environmental issues in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, where it's estimated that over a million tonnes will be discarded by 2030. These sachets, used for a variety of products due to their affordability and convenience, are difficult to recycle and often end up in landfills or polluting natural habitats. Despite their popularity among consumers for their practicality and cost-effectiveness, the environmental and social costs are substantial. Efforts to manage this waste are underway, with some producers committing to reduction roadmaps and governments mandating recycling, but challenges remain due to limited recycling capacity and the need for more comprehensive solutions, including phasing out sachets and investing in reuse systems.

The main key skill I have learned from this experience includes expanding my knowledge to fit in more potential ideas for a prompt. This was evident in the SCAMPER activities we did. My understanding of problem-solving and design thinking has changed throughout this course as I am more confident in my abilities to adopt an innovative design and reach out to user-centered solutions. Compared to our ideas from year 8 in $20 BOSS, this subject has expanded my knowledge much more. My communication has developed as I had the opportunities to not only become closer with certain individuals in my class but also talk to some people I have never talked to before. This made more connections for me but also helped me step outside my comfort zone and become familiar with others. Most activities required us to work with another individual, developing my collaboration skills. This opened up chances for me to hear other perspectives but also input my own. My creativity was one of the 5 C’s that was the most developed for this subject. For the final expo, we were required to make our set eye-catching. My team made posters and prototypes of our product from the limited materials we had. However, they turned out amazing and made our final stall extremely appealing. Finally, critical thinking was the second ‘C’ that challenged me the most as all our activities required us to think of innovative ways for a solution. Even after finding a solution, we would have to expand on it. These activities significantly developed my critical thinking skills. The knowledge developed in Action Project can allow me to confidently navigate future challenges and develop meaningful connections through personal, academic, and professional pathways, ensuring success in the future world - especially the innovative aspect. One challenge I faced in the course was presenting my pitch. I was nervous as we had to be clear and concise with no mistakes. At the time, I was thinking about my lines so I would not need to look up as much, but the feeling I had was just anxiousness. To overcome this, I made sure to follow some steps I had learned previously. I was taught to stand with my legs apart and my arms separated to prevent fiddling which helped me calm down. Ultimately, I felt happy about how the presentation came out. Embracing these qualities can open up a wide range of learning opportunities. These skills I have mentioned help me drive personal growth and also improve academic performance due to the multiple tasks of expanding our ideas. This helps me improve my character as it aids in self-reflection (especially through the padlet) The main thing I learned was that I can come up with and generate different solutions to different problems in the world. I always found activities like SCAMPER boring, but throughout this semester, I enjoyed looking at how I can expand a problem in multiple ways.
