Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible to indirectly address the events during the Red Scare. At the time, his target audience was likely very paranoid of others, accusing each other based on rumors and actions people associated with being communist. To avoid the accusations toward himself, Arthur Miller used The Crucible to convey the same actions reflected by the people, instead taking place in the Salem Witch Trials. He does this to criticize the judgement evoked based off of hysteria and chaos and to bring light to the irrational decisions one can make when under this influence.
