         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>It was a stormy day when Shermarke Abukar decided to buy me, a cheeseburger from McDonald's. As he sat staring at me, he opened his mouth and ate me within seconds. The I leaped into Shermarke's mouth swimming in his saliva. His teeth were able to break me down into tiny bits of pieces. As he swallowed, I slid down his esophagus.   </strong></div>]]></description>

After I passed through the stomach, I made my way to the three parts of the small intestine. Those three parts are the duodenum, jejunum, and the ileum.&nbsp;</strong></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>The small intestine is the main site of digestion and absorption. There, I witnessed the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, and the small intestine itself combine juices to break down nutrients so that they can be absorbed. Just like the small intestine, I made my way through the large intestine. The major function of the large intestine is to absorb water from the remaining indigestible food matter and transmit the useless waste material from the body. Finally, I made it to the final section of the large intestine, the rectum. After that, I drifted off to the anus.</strong></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>In the large intestine I saw something that was re absorbing water and absorbing minerals as feces were formed. Feces looked like the waste part of me (cheeseburger) that moved down into the rectum then passed out through the anus to complete the process of digestion.</strong></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Identify how the pancreas, gall bladder and liver are involved in digestion.&nbsp; What do they produce?&nbsp; How are these things used by other organs in the digestive system?</strong></div><div><br><strong>The pancreas is an organ located in the abdomen. It plays an essential role in converting the food we eat into fuel for the body's cells. The pancreas has two main functions: an exocrine function that helps in digestion and an endocrine function that regulates blood sugar. The liver has multiple functions, but its main function within the digestive system is to process the nutrients absorbed from the small intestine. Bile from the liver secreted into the small intestine also plays an important role in digesting fat. The gallbladder is a small storage organ located inferior and posterior to the liver. Though small in size, the gallbladder plays an important role in our digestion of food. The gallbladder holds bile produced in the liver until it is needed for digesting fatty foods in the duodenum of the small intestine.</strong></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>What happens with Amylase, Pepsin, and Gastrins?<br>Salivary amylase starts breaking down starch in the mouth and continues to do so after the food is passed into the stomach and small intestine. Salivary amylase works best at a neutral pH, but can survive the stomach acid.<br>Pepsin Breaks Down Food Proteins. The acid in the stomach causes food proteins to unfold in a process called denaturation. ... The small intestine will continue to break down proteins by chopping the peptides into amino acids, which can readily be absorbed into the blood stream.<br>In gastrinomas, high levels of gastrin moving around the gut stimulate acid release, leading to stomach and small intestine ulcers that may burst. High levels of stomach acid can also cause diarrhoea because the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged.</strong></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>The intestines produce hormone cholecystokinin while duodenum secretin that stimulate the pancreas and liver to release secretions. The liver releases bile that neutralizes the stomach acid and emulsifies the fats from the cheeseburger while the pancreas releases secretions that stops the action of pepsin, while providing an environment that is suitable for pancreatic enzymes function. It produces bicarbonate ions that also neutralize the acidity in chyme, amylase for digestion of starch, trypsin, chymotrypsin and elastase which all digest proteins. These enzymes are produce in inactive form to prevent auto-digestion; pepsinogen, trypsinogen, and chymotrypsogen, all of which are converted to their active forms by an enzyme enterokinase.</strong></div><div><strong>All the nutrients in the cheeseburger will be absorbed in the ileum. The small intestine increases surface area for absorption through tiny interior projections, like small fingers, called villi. </strong></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Ingestion is the process of taking food, drink, or another substance into the body by swallowing or absorbing it. You see, Digestion of a cheeseburger begins in the mouth. A brain reflex triggers the flow of saliva at sight or thought of food. Enzymes in saliva then begin the chemical breakdown of food; teeth aid in the mechanical breakdown of larger food particles.Saliva moistens the food, while the teeth masticate the food and make it easier to swallow. To accomplish this moistening goal, the salivary glands produce an estimated three liters of saliva per day. </strong></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>The process of breaking down food by mechanical and enzymatic action in the alimentary canal into substances that can be used by the body</strong>. <strong>Food is the body's source of fuel. The nutrients in food give the body's cells the energy they need to operate. Before food can be used it has to be mechanically broken down into tiny pieces then chemically broken down so nutrients can be absorbed. In humans, proteins need to be broken down into amino acids, starches into sugars, and fats into fatty acids and glycerol. This mechanical and chemical breakdown encompasses the process of digestion.</strong></div>]]></description>

Digested nutrients pass into the blood vessels in the wall of the intestine through a process of diffusion. The inner wall, or mucosa, of the small intestine is lined with simple columnar epithelial tissue. Most of the cheeseburger will be digested in the small intestines. Absorption of this burger will happen here. </strong></div>]]></description>
