1. How’s BENL life so far..was it what you expected when you first joined?

Love it, not a piece of cake obviously, your time will be filled up with reading, reading and reading (especially if you choose to specialise in literature) but FUN only if you enjoy reading!!

2. Which subjects do you find the most interesting or fun?

My top favourite BENL subjects by far (I only have two subjects left next semester!! FYP2 & stylistics) but am a HUGEEE fan of islamic literature, american literature and of course, of course, shakespeare (thought i would've hate it ngl)

3. Are there any subjects that are kinda tough, and how did you handle them?

I'm not a structural person, so linguistic subjects is tough for me, for me, I do exercises over and over agin to remember!! Dr Elena's exercise classes definitely helps imo!

4. Do the lecturers in BENL usually give more assignments or exams?

Assignments, jarang BENL ada exam

5. What tips would you give for surviving the first year in BENL?

Keep asking questions, don't skip classes, first year stuff usually occurs over and over again throughout your studies so focus!!

6. What do you enjoy the most about studying BENL?

I get to learn the stuff I've always wanted to learn

7. If you could go back to your first semester, what advice would you give yourself?

Advice number five there are numerousss instances me and my classmates were like "weh kita dah belajar la benda ni asal tak faham faham 😭" so focus ye!!

honestly, i don’t think it’s super wise to recommend specific readings (as much as i’d love to) because they vary every semester depending on the lecturer. what i can suggest instead is to focus on mastering the timeline of literary eras like the renaissance, modernism, postmodernism, and the key theories that emerged. once you understand the context of each era, it becomes so much easier to grasp any literary work, insha’Allah.

Pernah sekali ni waktu cuti sem dulu2 lah, Ada international student sakit kemudian meninggal and waktu tu hujung sem and kawan2 bilik dia semua dah pack bag and pulang. Lepas 2 minggu dia meninggal baru cleaner perasan lepas keluar bau yang tak menyenangkan. Untuk bersihkan mayat tu sampai kena call speacilist bak kata lecterur saya tu sebab cleaner uia pun tak sanggup nak bersihkan.

Berdasarkan pengalaman bro har lah ye, kalau boleh reserve subject tu reserve Dulu, mungkin akan dibuka satu kelas lagi kalau betul2 kuliyyah rasa perlu untuk buka.

Kalau let's say butang reserve pun dah takde, bro har suggest daftar subject manual. Cara dia gini:

1. Kenalpasti subject yg kita nak tu bawah kuliyyah apa.

2. Then isi borang ug 1 serta maklumat2 yang diperlukan di borang itu.

3. Kemudian korang kena pergi office/bilik academic advisor untuk hantar borang ug 1 yang dalam tu tertera kod subject yg korang nak tu.

4. Let's say kalau pergi bilik academic advisor atau office kata subject dah penuh, Ada satu je langkah lagi boleh buat iaitu korang jumpa lecterur yang mengajar

Dan mintak dia sign borang ug 1 then hantar balik kata pejabat kata yg lecterur tu (yg korang nak masuk kelas tu) okay untuk ambil lebihan student.

Basically it depends on what Kuliyyah you’re in, but long story short, the ones closest to the “centre” of the campus are Hafsah, Nusaibah and Safiyyah, but the closest one in terms of how quick it is to access all the important spots is I would say Mahallah Hafsah since it has mcm laluan pejalan kaki direct to the middle of the campus (Mahallah Asma’ is also about the same since Hafsah and Asma’ are right next to each other but it’s farther in), and from there it’s close to everything else

Here’s a map I’ve been using since I first got here to help visually (I keep having to refer to it now even :’) though it is from 2023 so if there’s any discrepancies we’ll try to straighten them 🫡

- student lain2, honestly okay je mahallah selain dua atas ni 😬 tapi kalau nak lebih dekat, pilihlah mahallah yang dekat dengan jalan besar gitu (rujuk peta ya)

Apapun, ada saja shuttle bas ikut schedulenya tapi sis sendiri suka jalan dan tak terikat dengan jadual bas~

Other factors;

- kalau nak bilik tiles baru hok lebih selesa: Mahallah Ruqayyah, Halimah, Maryam, Aminah, Asiah (tak silap)

*tapi mahallah tiles lama pun ok je srs sebab boleh pasang karpet/ hok plastik alas lantai 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽

- jika makanan penentu kebahagiaan hari anda (valid saja), makanan Mahallah Hafsa, Halimah (waktu Ramadhan best sebab buka at early dawn), Aminah, Safiyyah adalah antara yang baaaaanyak vendors dengan pelbagai variasi hidangan.

*adapun, mahallah lain pun ok saja. Biasanya basic package; ada masakan panas, nasi campur (tak semua juga) dan mungkin Ayam Gepuk/ seangkatan

TAPI JUGA, sepanjang 4 tahun sis moni belajar di bumi UIA, M. Safiyyah antara yang selalu ada isu katerer tak ada 🤧 jadi warga Safiyyah dengan sabar dan redhanya biasanya akan beli makanan di Mahallah Zubair (brothers) atau bungkus dari kafe di area student mall.

Nota tambahan: Mart Mahallah Hafsa antara mart yang sis moni saaaaangat suka sebab baaanyak pilihan barangan tak boycott — from icecream, detergents, and all. Lebih kurang 90% are non-boycott products (as informed by the owner) 💯💯 Jadi, kalau suka berbelanja di kampus dan nak elakkan barang boycott (please please do), bolehlah consider Hafsa/ Asma’ (dua ni berjiran) 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽

Can students skip it?

Generally, no attendance is compulsory for new students (attendance is recorded). Faculties repeatedly remind new undergrads that attendance is compulsory.

Besides being compulsory, Ta’aruf is when you do key things like EPT/APT/TPT placement tests and briefings; missing it can mess up your start.

* Wajib ambil: subjek core/required ikut study plan. Ini kena lock dulu.

* Elective/LE/UNGS: letak sebagai “filler” ikut slot kosong.

* Mark dalam planner: mana “tak boleh tinggal” vs. “boleh adjust”.

Step 2: Mapping Solat + Transit

* Plot waktu solat + buffer 15–30 min (jangan clash dengan kelas).

* Kalau ada commute (contoh naik train/bus), letak slot kosong untuk transit.

* Rule of thumb: avoid kelas 8am kalau mahallah atas bukit kecuali awak sanggup 🤭

Step 3: Time Block Method

* Guna Google Calendar / Notion / kertas kosong → draw grid Isnin–Jumaat, 8am–10pm.

* Slotkan:

Fixed: kelas core, tutorial, lab.

Flexible: electives, UNGS, LE.

Study blocks: at least 2–3 deep study slots per day (2–3 hours total).

- subject yang selalu akan open : English for academic writing LEED, Bahasa Melayu kerjaya LMBD, Family Management CCFM & Leadership CCLM

Sebenarnya as far as sis moni tahu, there's no formal limit untuk join club dekat IIUM.

Seorang student boleh join sebanyak mana club yang dia rasa mampu handle. Cuma practical side dia, tengok masa, commitment utama datang uni which is to study, dan aktiviti lain.

Kawan kawan sis moni biasanya join 2-3 club aktif & beberapa club lain as ahli biasa.

sooo short answer: limitless, tapi kena pandai balance ;D

1. Kelas untuk Family Management, Leadership Management, Skills and Niche

- Mereka tergolong dalam kelas yang pasti akan berlaku malam

- Kalau skills dan niche ni ikut skill dan niche apa juga, selalunya akan berlaku pada pukul 5 hingga 7 petang atau 8 hingga 10 malam

2. Kelas ganti

- Ni ikut kos juga, sebagai kuliyah Engineering takat ni kelas malam agak jarang sebab selalunya lect akan lebih mencuba ganti kelas pada waktu pagi atau ganti kelas dengan video instead

Pro tip: Kalau nampak subjek uni core dengan major jauh jauh location, plan pre-reg awal. Trust me, berlari dari satu kulliyyah ke kulliyyah lain is quite tiring (been there, done that). Tapi no worries, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger hehe 💪

Untuk pengetahuan adik, kalau adik tgk kat akademik kalendar tu kan, hanya sem 1 dan sem 2 sahaja 4 bulan setengah gitu, sem 3 (iaitu short sem) hanya 3 bulan setengah gitu, ketika short sem adik diberi pilihan sama ada nak kelas waktu shortsem atau pun tidak, sebab waktu short sem, diorang hanya ajarkan certain subjek je nanti, so selalu orang tak amiklah short sem, waktu ni kalau tak amik shortsem adik akan cuti selama 3 bulan +-, gituu.

So for our course kitorg ada dpt study plan during orientation week, which basically dia tolong plan out subject yg you should take for every semester (includes all subjects from Uni-required to Dept-required)

For first year first sem, average is about 5-6 subjects, so 15-18 credit hours as far as I know, I recommend starting light and then building it up so you don’t get burnt out and build the momentum upwards 👌

This of course excludes the courses yg perlu graduate with wayyy more credit hours mcm Law whose max credit per sem is more than 20

When do you use manual registration?

1. Pre-Reg portal penuh / crash / section dah FULL.

Nak tukar subject lepas first try (contoh clash dengan jadual). Tambah/drop subject selepas Pre-Reg tutup.

Important timing

Manual add/drop biasanya Week 1–2 of semester (refer IIUM Academic Calendar).

Lepas window tu tutup → memang tak boleh tambah/drop lagi.

How to do Manual Registration

1. Get the form

Pergi Kulliyyah Office (Academic Affairs / KAED, KIRKHS, KICT etc.).

Ambil Manual Add/Drop Form (borang warna biasanya putih/biru).

2. Fill in details

Tuliskan matric no, nama, course code, section, lecturer’s name.

Tick ADD or DROP.

3. Get approvals

Hantar pada lecturer/section lecturer → sign.

Lepas tu, Head of Department (HoD) / Assistant Dean (Academic Affairs) kena approve.

4. Submit

Return completed + signed form ke Office of Deputy Dean (Academic Affairs)

Staff akan key-in manually dalam sistem (i-Ma’luum).

5. Confirm in portal

Login i-Ma’luum → check “My Academic → Registered Courses” to confirm subject dah masuk.

I think usually mungkin bnyk dgr lagi rapat dgn roommates sbb classmates time 1st yr ni bnyk course yg seniors n ppl from other courses join skali sbb amik as minoring n so on, so mcm susah nk terus masuk air but kamcing dgn classmates as a small circle pun slalu jgk berlaku, even with different course n yr.

Also, there’s a possibility that your circle will be from ppl in your club or program2! So keep believing that you can find your own trusted & inter-dependable circle ^^ insya Allah ada org2 baik that will meet you :D

Those of us yg graduate from CFS yg kena belajar coding in C and Python pun dia rarely comes up, sure it makes you more familiar with how the structure of a coding language works tapi in the end dia tak bagi boost sangat since you’ll be learning a new coding language from zero so everyone will be at the same place

That being said kalau nk a bit of a head start insyaAllah you’ll be learning Java for first year so boleh read up a bit on that

In general kalau nk glance through the basics of programming in C pun okay since language lain is just like an expansion of it

Kalau dari segi prep barang, having a low-end laptop pun dah okay, plus certain subjects yg perlu computer will often be held kat a class yg ada computer that you can use

What I do suggest having through is a USB drive since it’ll help you wonders when you need to pindahkan files, especially kalau nk guna PC kat kelas2 tu 👍

1. Mereka ni tergolong dalam kumpulan subjek unicore, maknanya setiap setudent wajib amik tak kisah kuliyyah apa in order to graduate, other eg such as UNGS 1301 and Usrah, or usrah in action

3. Skill and niche is the cocu part in our academics, dua ii benda yang sama iaitu kelas koku, bezanya 2 ja tak silap

4. Skills - Wajib amik 2 sem ja, dan belajar skill tak dalam, sebab 2 sem ja belajar

5. Niche - Wajib amik 4 sem, dan belajar banyak pasal skill nya

6. Cara nak cari subjek skill dan niche ni, kalau nama subjek koku tu ada 2 ja, macam karate skill1 karate skill 2,itu adalah skill

Tak silap intro to psyc memang solely rely on tests (no assignments), dan dua-dua test tu boleh open book. Kitorang exam online within 24 hours maksudnya kena jawab soalan tu antara pukul 10pagi hari ini - 10pagi esok dalam masa 2 jam (tak silap). Peluang baik untuk kita asah skills membelek buku 📖

1. Aim club apa nak masuk; IIUMTV (tv) / IIUMFM (radio) / IIUMTODAY (journalism club) / IPRMSA (public relations club)

at least masuk 1 la antara kelab2 ni so that ada dapat pengalaman beyond classroom.

nak masuk bergilir pun boleh, as for me, first year- third year (IIUMFM), third year-4th year masuk IIUMTV, from here dapat la banyak sikit exposure. ramai je masuk dua2 sekaligus if pandai bahagi masa.

2. sama je macam course lain, jangan skip kelas, fokus dalam kelas, tanya lect if tak faham, fahamkan konsep and banyakkan relate dengan isu semasa dalam real world sebab communication is about current affairs jugak, so kena banyak tahu current issue and relate dengan theory belajar nanti.

3. jangan dengar stigma yang cakap communication ni senang dan tak relevan, sebab hakikatnya ramai yang ambik comm sebab ‘senang’ then kecundang. comm memang senang belajar, tapi nak apply dia tu susah juga.

- every company NEEDS communication people, so there’s no such thing as ‘communication tak relevant dalam universiti’, if no communication, no business can run, even a hospital NEEDS communication.

4. be proud of being a comm student. we are versatile and can do what most people can’t. kita ada peluang explore banyak benda dalam industry. even other courses pun masuk bidang communication untuk kerja. we have that advantage of having formal learning.

5. Tajdid niat, kenapa ambik communication? bukan setakat nak kerja je. tapi nak contribute back to the ummah and Islam through communication.

Untuk surau pulak, Sgt panas Dan memang port student international lah dekat surau siddiq ni, kadang2 subuh situ pun takde qunut. But kalau nak rasa pengalamn belajar luar negara tapi duduk Malaysia mahallah siddiq beserta surau nya menjadi pilihan.

MRC diorang pun rajin buat program. Kalau Saya 8/10 ⭐

So since di degree waktu kelas lain2, tak kan crowded Sgt pun tandas untuk Mandi sebab semu org Mandi waktu lain2 since class pun start waktu lain2.

Bare in mind class2 koku macam ni usually malam or lewat ptg or weekend so, kalau korang okay malam ngan weekend korang Ada class so kira okay je untuk ambil waktu first year. Sekian.

But also note that honestly aminah got the biggest window compared to other mahallahs, so it’s practically the same as having them be right next to you.

to me, for freshman, always expect that it is more than you think when it comes to Political Science (ig it applies to others as well) but what I meant by this is the general idea of ‘politics’ that common people have are just the surface (and I mean, at the thinnest level) of what politics actually is. So always be curious and engage with the lecturer (if ur lazy and do this there’s a high chance u get A- at least)

Lecturers poli kebanyakannya baik and senang bagi markah. There are few lecturers are ‘Karen’-ly strict but they’re still gonna give us good grade anyway hehe

Polisci have 4 specialisation; IR, Comparative Politics, Public Admin, and Political Philosophy. I can’t suggest what specialization is the best as it depends on your preference. But trust me, along the way (as you’ll take a pre-requisite course), you’ll find your own interests / path.

1. Coway: Ada, tapi tak semua block.

2. ⁠Jarak: Tak dekat macam Aminah, Hafsa & Asma. Tapi tak jauh sangat pun— jalan kaki dalam 20 minit.

3. ⁠Kebersihan: ni paling ana suka! Toilet, bilik, koridor, surau semua bersih sebab cleaner rajin & cuci betul2. Surau guna vinyl floor (bukan carpet), kafe pun bersih. (Tmi; kadang-kadang hujung minggu ada kucing masuk toilet & berak (selalu kalau musim hujan/tak tahan), jarang jadi tapi pernah berlaku.).

Bilik & fasiliti:

• Bilik luas, ada 2 meja (1 study, 1 panjang).

• Locker parcel banyak & selamat.

• Ampaian cukup, tapi rendah (tak sesuai untuk hanger).

• dekat dengan parking, senang parents nak hantar barang. tak banyak tangga nak turun naik ke kereta.

• paling suka layout asiah! transporter/grab/food delivery pun senang nak reach sebab m/o depan tu je & terus nampak.

Makanan:

• Cafe Asiah ok je, selain masakan panas/layan diri tu ada stall lain macam ayam kunyit, dumplings, mee tarik & ayam gunting. Portion cukup, harga pun still reasonable (tapi ni depends, ada yang rasa murah dan ada yang rasa mahal).

• suasana cafe asiah tak semeriah macam Halimah/Hafsa/Maryam.

• Weekend masakan layan diri agak limited & timing masak tak konsisten (kadang2 makanan siap awal, kadang2 lewat)— tapi boleh pergi makan kat kafe lain nearby.

Mart: Ada 2, satu untuk food & beverages, satu lagi untuk barang keperluan/stationery. Buka 830 - 11 malam.

Keselamatan:

Generally selamat, gate tutup pukul 9 tapi boleh masuk ikut gate Aminah.

*Cuma pernah jadi kes pakaian dekat ampaian kena curi. Kalau risau, better beli ampaian sendiri & letak dalam bilik/luar bilik (kalau bilik hujung).

Overall: Asiah sangat worth it especially kalau jenis suka kebersihan & nak bilik selesa. Suasana tenang, fasiliti cukup, cuma bab makanan maybe tak semeriah mahallah lain.

Personally, kalau boleh repeat setiap sem memang nak repeat!

Soalan ni related dengan mahallah paling dekat dengan course Halal semalam. Since KICT kat atas bukit, yang paling dekat pun (Aminah, Hafsah) still kena jalan jauh sikit jugak huhu.

Based on apa sis moni observe, kebanyakan kawan kawan KICT either naik bus, scooter, or memang gigih jalan kaki. Don’t worry, anggap je exercise plus rezeki kerja banyak tunggu korang nanti hehe chaiyokkk

Selain dari tu, tak silap saya, merekalah paling banyak ada coway atau cuckoo, macam setiap blok ada kot tak silap, selalu sampai sana senang ja nak isi air.

Zubir pun ada parkir paling banyak, reserved untuk setiap blok. Surau beraircon, best.

Siapa suka kenalan International tu mesti suka zubir, situ ramai international.

Bermakna tak boleh nak ambil subjek awal ke atau lambat ke, just ikut study plan Dan Koed memang allocate kelas ikut bilangan student pada satu2 batch. Kat bawah ni study plan or PDF file untuk semua subjek Koed yg kena daftar, rasannya semua dah lengkap dalam ni. Koed memang dah tetapkan minor yang kena ambil, makannya kalau kelas elective yg korang ambil tak clash dgn class minor Dan major yg korang ambil so boleh ambil. Sekian.

So far, statistics ni agak susah sebab satu-satunya subject yang totally required kira-kira. Banyak demand untuk faham cara nak jawab, termasuk mengira, tak termasuk lagi assignments yang kena membaca juga dan main ibm spss kat laptop.

Selainnya, mungkin english for academic writing dan history and philosophy in psychology untuk first year students. Sebab banyak kena hafal theory dan filosofi sejarah pasal cognitive thinking and behavior.

Untuk tips mungkin put hundreds on finals, class, discussions, and assignments. Put hundreds oso pada doa dan tawakkal juga, inshaAllah dekan dalam tangan (aamiin)

Of course tips differ from one individual to another. Saya tak sure whether awak ambil LLB atau LLBS. Jadi, saya divide kepada 2 ya.

Civil Subjects:

1. Strengthen your english comprehension. Reading statutes/acts can be very confusing sebab ayat dia belit-belit.

2. ⁠Kena rajin baca full report cases, be ready untuk baca 60 pages report. Jangan depend solely on the material facts of the case, know the judgment behind the verdict given by the judge.

3. ⁠Hafal cases from awal semester (it will be a burden if you're starting mid sem sebab baaanyak).

4. ⁠BE ALERT waktu tutorial slots bukak, pilih waktu seawal mungkin supaya class habis awal (kalau nak tahu cara check slot tuto, boleh pm saya 😊).

5. ⁠Pilih lecturers wisely, please please please.

6. ⁠Jangan scribble anything dalam statutes nanti tak boleh bawak masuk exam.

7. ⁠Beli second hand/rent je textbook (sebab maaahal, one book boleh reach up to RM800, depends).

Shariah Subjects:

1. Expand your arabic vocabulary sebab lama-lama kita akan mengira dalam bahasa arab (subject mirath kira faraidh nanti)

Above all, carilah circle of friends yang supportive! It's a tough journey really, a tiring and sleep-deprived one. Tak pernah lagi jumpa law student yang tak burnout. So, build a circle that keeps you going when things get tough & jangan lupa bersenamm🪽

For Mahallah sisters, ada sistem yang slightly varies.

Setahu sis setiap mahallah ada saja dedicated area for parcel drop from couriers.

Ada yang guarded eg M. Sumayyah yang mana you need to pay around 50 cents for every parcel you want to collect as they provide the service untuk monitor parcel collection for a scheduled time (to avoid parcel theft)

Tapi most mahallah tidak guarded sangat. Paling bertuah ada CCTV macam di Ruqayyah (itupun MASIH ada theft cases huhu). Meanwhile Mahallah Nusaibah tiada CCTV and not guarded. Untuk begini, sangat adviced untuk ambil parcel secepatnya untuk elakkan kecurian (likewise, peringatan: jangan kita salah ambil parcel orang lain dengan sengaja atau tidak~)

There’s also the option to have your parcel dropped at Poslaju Centre di Kulliyyah IRK. Sini tak kena bayar to collect. And have working hours that they open for collection too.

Hampir empat tahun dah sis moni di halimah, jarak dengan HS barrable la, jauh sikit dan agak kicap kalau lambat haha tapi halimah selasa la bagi sis moni dekat dengan swimming pool, gym & female sport centre kalau nak release stress petang petang.

Nak menjawab soalan awak, setahu sis moni semua block ada coway cuma block D je. Washer and dryer pula, ada dekat block A & E. Tapi jujurnya, sis moni jarang/ lama gila dah tak basuh baju di halimah sebab dah jadi weekly routine bawak luggage ke maryam just a walk away!! untuk mendobi sebab, dekat halimah kena guna coins :')

dekat maryam boleh guna qr je and ada mart 24 hours!! so highly recommended sis moni dah banyak kali stay up sanpai subuh study situ musim genting haha ada apa apa concern lagi, jangan segan tanya okie

So yeah, maybe berdasarkan pengalaman bro har, maybe tu normal bila dah kawan yg kita kenal kita akan duduk dgn dia je sebab buat apa nak susah2 berkenalan dgn orang baru kan,but culture tu tak sepatutnya jadilah ,banyak gila peluang kita terlepas bila ada mindset macam tu. Tak dapat jumpa dan kenal org baru dan trust me attitude tu jugak biasannya kita buat bila dgn international student.

Makannya bro har menyeru, students cfs jadilah friendly tolong kawan2 kita yg baru masuk ni juga maybe direct intake student jugak boleh mingle around another direct intake student dan buat whatsapp group sesama kamu.

Hellooo jangan risau sangat, my two BENL friends wasn't even aware we had to register after two weeks of the pre reg duration masa first year. Try to take electives that you think you can score to increase your credit hours.

But overall, you're doing great tau!! It is undeniably hard to rebut subjects especially as a first year so chin up nanti dah first week, laju laju pergi office kuliyyah untuk manual registration yaa!! :D
