The meaning:
It is not only what she wants to learn, it is also part of the Cuban heritage. 
Evidence:
On page 102, the page says “Clave is the hidden heartbeat of whatever Batista or Castro is playing”. So, they use that in their music, and I know that their music is important to them. Like on the boat they were on, they were playing music. In the middle of the night, and then something bad happened. That ruined the moment. =(

I think it means hope because against all odds mahmood found a teenage mutant ninja along the the shops.
