What does it mean to be a "Global Citizen?"

When we think of the term "citizen", we think of a specific area of the world. A global citizen is someone who recognizes that the world is made up of many different cultures and backgrounds. In this way, they can understand and seek to find out more about people from all over the world, not just the area in which they inhabit. When a person is a global citizen, they comprehend and have compassion for all areas of the world and all people just as a citizen of a particular area would strive to care for their own home.

Students that are allowed to share their personal experiences and backgrounds and collaborate with others that may not share the same experiences are preparing to be internationally-minded members of society. Students should be taught that there is not simply one way of doing something, that there are many different strategies practiced by people throughout the world in order to achieve a common goal.

Schools prepare students for this by emphasizing the different viewpoints that come into play when teaching and by adding current events and real world scenarios into course content in biology and other subjects. For example, teachers can help students identify different cultural perspectives on preserving a habitat or endangered species when teaching an environmental biology lesson. This provides opportunities for students to empathize with people with different viewpoints and also allows them to create their own solutions based on these multiple perspectives.

Classroom Benefits of Diverse Contributions

My classroom includes students from many different cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Students often collaborate with one another on designing experiments, interpreting data, and responding to scientific journal articles. By allowing students to discuss ideas with others that may not have the same background as they do, new perspectives are added to the discussion. These new perspectives create opportunities for deeper understanding of classroom material. Students may establish a new way of performing an experiment or be able to solve a unique problem through this collaboration.

Helping Students with International Understanding in Biology

The field of biology is one that can be easily dismissed as strictly fact-based, where standards focus on whether statements are simply "correct" or "incorrect". However, there can be much added to a biological science course in terms of international mindedness. There are many contributors to this field that are from various backgrounds and historically, some individuals were excluded from being credited for their work. This presents an opportunity for the biology teacher to connect their lessons to the historical context of the time of their discoveries.
Students can also be tasked with relating classroom curricula with current events in specific areas of the world. Cultural perspectives on the use of certain biological technology or the preservation of habitats can allow students to understand that there are many factors that go into the creation of regulations beyond the scientific data from experiments.

Classroom Activities for International-Mindedness in Students

There are activities that can promote international-mindedness in the classroom.
Reading scientific journal articles and having a discussion about potential resolutions or further studies is an activity that can be expanded to involve the perspectives of individuals from other areas of the world or the students themselves. Students can be asked to research the area of the world in which the study takes place, which can provide important background information for the current issue explored in the study. Students can discuss the factors that have lead to the study and can take this into account when exploring additional studies relating to the primary issue.
A more indirect way of exploring multiple perspectives is by allowing students to collaborate with one another to design an experiment or study and analyze their results. Students can learn about basic steps of the scientific method and research by examining correlations between different factors in their environment and others in different areas of the world. In doing so, students will learn about these different factors but also learn from one another. Students offer different ideas for study to their group and share these ideas with the class as a whole. This allows students to view their peers as individuals with different ways of thinking that are valued in the scientific process.
