Anna Chaplains are named after the widow, Anna, who appears with Simeon in Luke’s gospel; both are good role models of faithful older people. Anna Chaplains are there for people of strong, little or no faith at all.

Our vision is to see an Anna Chaplain in every small- and medium-sized community in the country, and for the Anna Chaplain name to become synonymous with spiritual care for older people.

Chaplains working in multi-disciplinary healthcare settings bring a wide range of much needed psychological and spiritual support to patients, families and staff. Yet this unique and varied role, has little bespoke training and wider support on offer.

Our resourcing offers a community of likeminded people and training in holistic health so that chaplains:

• deepen the support they offer from theological, scientific and practical perspectives;

• feel sustained and more confident in their unique role and contribution;

• receive robust training on topics such as loss, trauma and pain;

• find connection and support throughout the year.

NUA is an excellent resource for young people who are interested in learning more and asking tough questions about the Christian faith. If you’ve run a Youth Alpha course and are wondering what next, NUA is an ideal follow on, looking at similar questions but giving an opportunity to dig a bit deeper.

Who is it for? 

Chaplains in any sector or context, either paid or voluntary, experienced chaplains and those new to the work.

What will it cover? 

The training explores Christian approaches to human flourishing in mind, body and spirit. The aim is to help chaplains deepen the support they offer from theological, scientific and practical perspectives. Key topics will include loss and trauma, why storytelling leads to healing and how to feel confident in the unique value of chaplaincy in a multi-disciplinary setting.

Who created it?

Crucially, the training needs were identified with significant input from active chaplains supporting people experiencing complex mental and spiritual health challenges, including trauma, suicidal ideation, adverse childhood experiences and homelessness.  The course was then designed by GoHealth in consultation with the YMCA* drawing on the skills of education professionals, trauma specialists, theologians, scientists and professional filmmakers. It is now piloted extensively and further improved since 2024. The content utilises leading research from a number of academic disciplines including science, medicine and psychology.

How will it be delivered?

The training will be delivered as a virtual gathering via Zoom. Each two-hour session will include professionally recorded teaching videos, reflective exercises, small group discussion and larger group feedback. It will be delivered by expert facilitators and trainers to ensure the highest possible standard.

Our main involvement in schools is through Religious Observance Assemblies. We have also led puppet and music workshops and RME classes. We have worked in over 70 primary schools leading assemblies with thousands of children all over Scotland.

We recently launched a brand new resource called ‘Intro Series’. The series has 8 downloadable episodes, with creative resources, lesson plans and additional content for teachers to use that will help children explore the Christian faith.

Prayer spaces in schools enable children and young people, of all faiths and none, to explore these life questions, spirituality and faith in a safe, creative and interactive way.

Taking a broadly Christian perspective as a starting point, prayer spaces give children and young people an opportunity to develop skills of personal reflection and to explore prayer in an open, inclusive and safe environment.

The approach does not proselytise and purposely allows pupils to make their own meaning and to draw their own conclusions.
