The Horseshoe Nebula is a Dark Nebula and is probably the most famous example of it. 
2. Dark Nebulae are interstellar clouds that contain a very high concentration of dust. 
3. Since, it's a dark nebula it scatters light and makes it opaque so we can't see it through visible light. 
4. We can see it, however, if it's front of an emission nebula which the Horseshoe Nebula is. 
5. It's about 1,500 light years from our Sun. 
6. It was first imaged at Harvard in 1888 and its official name is Barnard 33. 
7. It is located i the Orion Constellation and it is used as practice for intermediary astronomers to find. 
8. The emission nebula behind it is called IC 434. 
9. It will eventually disperse due to UV light from nearby stars evaporating its gas cloud.
