During this stage, children from the ages of 0-1 develop either trust or mistrust for their caregivers. If they can rely on their mother/caregiver to provide them with their basic needs and affection, they will have a secure sense of the world. In other words. They will trust. However, if their caregivers are unreliable/abusive, the opposite will happen, and the infant will develop mistrust. The textbook also highlights this by stating "If trust predominates as it should, children develop hope, the belief they can fufill their needs and obtain their desires." I resolved this stage with trust. I had a loving mother who provided me with affection and basic necessities.

This stage in Erikson's development occurs during early childhood.(1-3 years) During this stage children start to develop a small level of independence. Children may start completing simple tasks on their own such as throwing away a piece of trash or helping clean up their mess. During this period, they still need guidance from adults while completing each task. The text highlights this by stating "As children are better able to make their wishes understood, they become more powerful and independent. Because unlimited freedom is neither safe nor healthy, said Erikson, some shame and doubt also have a necessary place." I resolved this stage with autonomy. I wanted to complete simple tasks such as brushing my teeth on my own during this stage. My mother encouraged independence, but still guided me.

Initiative vs. Guilt

This stage occurs during ages 3-6. Similar to the previous stage, children in this stage are beginning to crave independence more. The desire to "do more" increases drastically during this time. However, the "doing" that takes place during this time can either be praised or ridiculed depending on how appropriate the child's actions are in society. The texts highlights this stage by stating " Preschool children can do and want to do-more and more. At the same time, they are learning that some of the things they want to do meet social approval, whereas others do not." I resolved this stage with guilt. I didn't want to do my homework, so as a result I felt guilty. I lacked the initiative to want to do more outside of school.

This stage occurs between the ages of 7-11. During this stage, children become aware of the skills they are good at, which boosts their confidence. At the same time, children are also becoming aware of their struggles, which can lead to feelings of inferiority. When children are willing to overcome these struggles, they have resolved with industry. The text highlights this by stating " Developing a sense of industry, by contrast, involves learning how to work hard to achieve goals. " I resolved this stage with industry. I excelled in reading yet struggled with math during this stage. To overcome this, I practiced my multiplication over and over again, and went to tutoring. I overcame my struggle.

This stage occurs during the ages of 12-18. During this stage, teenagers begin to develop a sense of identity. This identity/sense of self changes several times as the teenager becomes aware of their likes and dislikes. They "try on" new personalities as they navigate their role in society. The texts highlights this stage by stating " Identity forms as young people resolve three major issues: the choice of an occupation, the adoption of values to live by, and the development of a satisfying sexual identity." I resolved this stage first with confusion, by trying new hobbies and changing my appearance and interests frequently. However, I eventually established a solid sense of Identity, which has remained stable.

This stage occurs during the ages of 19-29. During this stage, young adults begin to develop deeper, more intimate relationships with those around them. This can be romantically and platonically. These adults begin to ask themselves questions such as "Will I end up alone?" "Will I be married?" "Will I have children?" I resolved this stage with intimacy. I sought out deep, personal connections both romantically and platonically with those around me.

This stage occurs between the ages of 30-64. During this stage, adults begin to take on a more established role in society. For example, most adults are contributing to their society through their career. They also have the opportunity to be even more productive members of society by participating in actives that affect their community. Stagnation occurs when adults become unproductive or "Set in their ways" refusing to grow and develop. I have not entered this stage yet; however, I predict I will resolve with generativity. I plan to be involved in my community as have a stable career as a teacher.

This stage occurs during the age of 65 and continues throughout the rest of the person's late adult life. During this stage, older adults ponder the meaning of life and reflect back on the choices they made during theirs. Do they have any regrets? Did they live a fulfilling life? Have they come to terms with the ending of their life? Although I haven't entered this stage, I predict that I will resolve with integrity. Hopefully I feel as if I lived a fulfilled life and am happy with the choices I have made.
