In the 1960s many women from different cultures were speaking out about how they were doing the same job as men but were getting paid a lot less than men. This wasn't the only thing that they were trying to stand up for they were also being sexually assaulted inside the workplace and because the workplaces mostly consisted of men nothing was done about this. The worst thing that was happening to women was in the bedroom they would sleep with someone and get an unwanted pregnancy but around 1960 there was a new invention from the government which was a birth control pill which stopped 80% of women that were in the childbearing range from having any unwanted children. In America during World War II the National War Labor Board told employers in 1942 to make adjustments to females pay because of how many women were volunteering or just working in the war industries. The women were happy with this decision but they were scared after the war to go back to their old jobs and old pay so they stood up and told the government that they want equal pay for every job they do. This request was completely denied by the business owners and after the war all the women were kicked out of their jobs in the war industry to make room for the war veterans.

Journey to Gender Equality

The journey for women and men to get gender equality has had its ups and many downs. But earlier this year all around Australia 125 employers were awarded the EOWA (Employer of Choice for Women) This citation says that they are striving on closing the pay gap for women and many more issues like workplace sexual harassment or just harassment in general. These employers place women and men where they can feel comfortable working so in a safer and friendly environment with people that will be there for them when they mess up or just need assistance. Before all these nice organisations came to the table which support women there were many people who just treated them like dirt because they could do it and get away with it. Getting the pay gap to go away is going slow and is being slowed because heaps of women are still doing housework or family work its hard to compare the wage of a stay at home mum to a working male in the mines for example. The government is trying to get rid of the pay gap when men and women do the same job and have the same qualifications and experiences.

In the 1960s a Home Economics Textbook had these simple steps for women "housewives". 1. Have dinner ready: Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal on time. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospects of a good meal are part of the warm welcome needed. 2. Prepare yourself: Take 15 minutes to rest so you will be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your makeup, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking. His boring day may need a lift. 3. Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before you husband arrives. Run a dust cloth over the tables. 4. Make him comfortable: Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or suggest he lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soft, soothing and pleasant voice. 5. Listen to him: you may have a dozen things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first. This was the way most child-bearing age women spend their day because they had to or they would be punished but this all changed when the government introduced contraception which 80% of women that had been going through this then purchased so they couldn't get stuck in an abusive relationship because they had a kid. There was many things that women could have or do: 1. A credit card women in the 1960 couldn't have a card if women tried the bank would refuse to issue a credit card to an unmarried women if she was married her husband would have to co-sign for the credit card. 2. Serve on a jury this varied by state because some place had already deemed women fit to serve on a jury. 3. Go on the birth control pill, Women were not allowed to go onto the birth control fill by choice until the 1960s doctors had to prescribe it to them and usually didn't allowed unmarried women to receive it. 4. Get an Ivy League education, this was not allowed because men controlled the schools and didn't females getting higher educations than them. 5. Women couldn't receive equality in the workplace, men often sexual and mentally assaulted women because the higher in command were all men at the time the men got away with it just told to leave her alone and the women was left scarred.

Current day women received many rights and different type of bonuses but they are still working on closing the pay gap but sometimes women do get paid more now for doing the same job which is fine but only in some instances. In relationships now there is mutual understanding and they both share everything and not only one person does the chores around the house (this still happens sometimes only in select households). Women now are able to go to Harvard and Ivy League, they can use contraception if they please whenever they want to, they are allowed to get a credit card and they definitely get treated better in the workplace than how they did back in the 1960s and 1970s
