My name is America Torres and I am 23 years old. I am a mother to an amazing 1 year old little girl. On my free time I enjoy spending time with my little one and my family. I also enjoy volunteering within my community. I strongly believe that we are all capable of making a difference within our communities, it just takes determination. I am also a strong believer that in order to reach success one must work hard. Ever since I was little my parents would always tell me that in order to become someone in life, I must work hard and go to college because nothing in life comes easy. I am currently a preschool teacher. Being a preschool isn’t all rainbows and butterflies; however it is a very rewarding job. It feels good knowing that I am making a significant impact in children’s lives. I am grateful to wake up every morning, wanting to go to work because every day is special one way or another with the children that I consider being my own. 



 During my sophomore and junior year in college, I committed to a two-year term of service as an AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps at AltaMed is a program that is specifically designed to address the needs in our local community. As part of a National Service program, I participated in an intensive volunteer movement by engaging others in community service activities. In addition, I participated in training that focus on ethic of service and civic responsibility, as well as professional development. Being part of AmeriCorps helped me grow professionally and personally.
