Ziauddin Yousafzai: Ziauddin is Malala’s dad. He plays an important part in the book and is a big role model for Malala. Ziauddin is a teacher for the Khushal School in Swat. Malala’s father is bold, passionate about his beliefs, and is willing to stand up for anything. Throughout the book, he goes around Pakistan during very dangerous times in the country knowing the risks and speaking out against the Taliban and continued to do so while getting numerous death threats from them. On October 9th, 2012, Malala was shot by Taliban gunmen as an attempted assassination. It happened on her way back home from school after taking an exam. According to the book, the bullet had grazed her temple, near her left eye, and traveled eighteen inches down to her left shoulder, where it stopped. It could’ve taken out her eye or gone into her brain, so it was a miracle that her brain wasn’t severely damaged. However, her facial never had been severed by the bullet causing half of her face to be paralyzed and having to go undergo multiple surgeries. Fortunately, she eventually regained 96% of her facial function around July of 2014 and is still recovering to this day.
