         <description><![CDATA[<div>The article below, published in the&nbsp;<em>Mongonagalia Mirror,&nbsp;</em>comments on the upcoming state election in Virginia in 1855.  This election was pivotal: not only was the state four years removed from democratizing its state constitution and inaugurating universal white male suffrage, but national developments concerning slavery and the rise of the Republican Party and abolitionism concerned many in the Old Dominion.  Virginians elected the passionately pro-slavery, pro-democratic firebrand Henry A. Wise of Accomack County as governor, an election which reflected residents' attempt to reacquire the "equilibrium" noted by the editor below.  </div>]]></description>
